Senator Donald Harrison normally prided himself on being able to sleep through any turmoil or stress. Heâd been in this game too long to let the worries of the day follow him into his dreams and knew that exhaustion was one of the worst things to pile on to a problem. Working in the Senate, running a campaign, dealing with angry lobbyistsâsuch things took a focused mind, and that wasnât easy to maintain through the fog that came from an interrupted night. Even so, sleep had proven difficult as of late, and so he was wide awake, staring into the dim light of his bedroom when the phone rang. The phone heâd been instructed to keep for only one caller.
âTell me youâve found him,â he couldnât help but grumble into the phone once the call was answered.
âThe plan was to let him escape and resurface in his own time. He wonât stay underground much longer,â said Mr. Gray. There was an edge to his voice, and the slightest hint of surprise. Donald didnât like that at all.
âI need to know what heâs doing, who heâs talking to, and where he is!â insisted the senator. âDo you understand me?â
This part of the plan had never seemed like it would be a problem. How could John Luther manage to evade a man with as much training, resourcefulness, and cunning as Mr. Gray, a professional? It would almost be impressive if it werenât so maddening.
âI paid you in advance,â he said, his blood pressure rising. âI hired you because youâre supposed to be the best. But youâve been outsmarted by a preacher!â
There was silence on the other end of the line. Beads of sweat popped onto Donaldâs forehead. He wondered if heâd gone too far.
But that would be ridiculous. He was the one calling the shots here, not his hired hand. A hired hand who was failing to deliver.
âDonât worry. Iâll find him,â said Mr. Gray, his voice like sandpaper rubbing against stone.
The line went dead.
Donald threw the phone down, took a deep breath and counted to ten.
He had to forget about John Luther. He had to forget about Mr. Gray and let the man do his job. Unfortunately they werenât the only challenges he was dealing with at the moment. The real reason he couldnât sleep right nowâthe thing that had been occupying the majority of his thoughtsâwas something far more positive thankfully. A light at the end of the tunnel for what had been some of the most difficult work heâd attempted to do in his entire career. Today, the final piece would fall into place. And not even John Luther, wherever he was holed up, could stop the march of progress any longer.
The world was ready for change. The world would change, and Senator Donald Harrison would be at the front of the line, leading the procession.
Glancing at the clock once more, he knew his night was over. There would be no more sleep for a while.
Donald rose, slipped on his robe, and stepped into the bathroom, where he splashed water on his face.
