Elle couldn’t believe it. She truly couldn’t believe she was about to tell Sarah that they should take in a family of three kids. She knew Sarah would think she was crazy at first, in the same way Elle felt before she heard the story. She had waited for Ryder to go to bed, and now that it was just her and Sarah, she was ready to have this talk.

Before she had a chance to say anything, Sarah sat down on the couch beside her and draped an arm over her shoulders. “Can I talk to you about something?”

Well, that was unexpected. “Of course. You can talk to me about anything.”

Sarah chewed on her bottom lip as if she was extremely nervous about whatever she had to say. “I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I know it was my idea to adopt, and I really pushed how much I wanted to have kids this way, but…” Sarah closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I don’t think I can do this anymore. Once Ryder leaves, I think I need to be done or at least take a break. I’m… I’m not strong enough for this. I thought I was, but I’m not.”

When Elle saw the tears falling from Sarah’s eyes, she considered not even mentioning her call with the caseworker. She could call her back and tell her it wouldn’t work, and Sarah would never know. She wouldn’t have to be put through more pain. Elle knew Sarah though. She had no doubt Sarah would want to know this, and she could never keep something from her, even if she thought it might be for the best.

Elle put a hand on Sarah’s cheek and guided Sarah’s eyes toward hers. “First of all, I just want to say that you, Sarah Panepinto, are the strongest woman I’ve ever met. Even when you feel weak, it’s your strength that keeps this family together. Second of all, if you want to stop for now or forever, I completely understand. I respect any decision you make. With that all being said, there is something I need to talk to you about.”

Sarah’s eyebrows furrowed as she studied Elle’s face. “What is it?”

“There are three siblings that need a home.”

“For how long?”

“This one is pretty much a guaranteed adoption.” Elle’s stomach churned at the thought of why that was.

Sarah scoffed. “We’ve heard that before.” She shook her head. “Even if it is guaranteed, three is too many to take on all at once. And for now, we still have Ryder too. Four kids? You might be amazing, but even Superwoman has her limits.”

Elle nodded. She knew she needed to just come out and tell Sarah the real reason she brought this up, but she needed to ease into it. “I know. That’s the same thing I said.”

“Who are they living with now?”

“Their grandparents, but they are adamant that they aren’t able to care for them the way they would need to. They still want
