Chapter Seventeen

MILLER

Miles, Lilly, and I were in the kitchen eating lunch when she asked, “So Miller, when are you going to pop the question?”

“Say what?” My mouth hung open, which was probably gross as I’d just bitten into my sandwich.

“Ha! You heard me! When are you going to ask Mariah to marry you?”

I swallowed the bite of food, which had grown to the size of an elephant, and choked it down with some water. “I, er, that’s to say, uh…”

“What? Don’t tell me with the way you two have been going at it, you haven’t thought about it?” Lilly did not pull any punches or beat around the bush when she wanted to know something.

“Um, yeah, well, we’ve only been together a few months.”

“Oh, come on. You’ve been living together that long and that toddler has you twisted up in knots. You’re crazy about both of them.”

“And? What’s your point?”

She glanced at Miles and asked, “Are all men this dense?”

He grinned and shrugged.

“Oh, you don’t want to get involved.”

“That’s right. I’m neutral over here,” he answered.

“Neutral smeutral. You’re also blind if you don’t see what I do. I think I’m going to shed my heterosexuality and become a lesbian. Women have so much more sense than men when it comes to relationships.”

I took a gulp of water and then said, “Lilly, you can’t just decide not to be a heterosexual the same way you can’t decide not to be a homosexual.”

“Yeah, well, I wish I could. Life would be easier. Anyhoo, just bite the dang bullet before she gets that immobilizer off or you’ll lose her.”

“Lose her? Why?”

She leaned across the table. “Have you looked at her? She’s stunning. There aren’t too many women out there like Mariah. Just sayin’.”

She didn’t have to tell me that. Mariah was everything I’d always wanted in a woman and then some, but marriage? I didn’t think I was ready for that step yet.

Lilly stood up and stuffed her leftovers in the trash, then came by and knocked on my head. “Think about it, shit for brains. You don’t want to lose her to someone else in town.” Then she breezed out of the room, orange-and-pink hair and all. She’d changed the color a few weeks ago and it was bright.

I stared at Miles. “You’re not going to say anything?”

“Nope. I’m staying far away from this one, my friend. The woman you marry is your business, but she’s right. If you don’t grab her, someone else will. She’s the total package.”

“The total package? How the hell would you know?”

He lifted a shoulder. “I don’t. Jessie told me that.” Then the asshole smirked at me. The world was conspiring against me.

Honestly though, she was the total package and I’d never been involved with anyone like her before. She checked every box I had for a mate, so what was the holdup? Marriage was a huge step and we hadn’t been together that long. Why the rush? We had all our lives to look forward to.

There was also the kid thing.
