MEGAN GAVE UP on her work and pushed herself away from her desk. She left her office and clambered up the stairs to the roof. She draped her arms over the railing and let out a long sigh. She would have to tread carefully, but she wasn’t giving up on Nikky. Megan clutched at the railing to stop her hands from shaking. Maybe she was reading too much into the matter. Maybe her own history made her oversensitive and biased.

Megan hadn’t allowed herself to think of those days clearly for a while and the memory hit her hard. She concentrated on keeping her breaths even as she fought the waves of anxiety. She almost reached for her pill bottle, but stopped herself. She wouldn’t give in. Not this time.

She was involved in her own inner struggle and didn’t notice she wasn’t alone on the roof until Syler’s long frame settled down beside her.

“You weren’t at your desk and I was wondering if I’d find you here,” Syler said in a low voice. “Is everything okay?”

“It is now,” Megan said. She turned around and leaned back against the railing. Her dark mood vanished in an instant as she looked at Syler. She ached for Syler’s touch, but didn’t feel ready to reach out. Instead she said, “I talked to Nikky Okamoto today and confirmed it—we need to change pronouns. She’s transgender.”

“Okay,” Syler said in her usual easy way.

“The family doesn’t seem supportive. And I suspect Nikky’s father is abusing her. I talked to her mother today and she seems scared. Luckily he’s away on a business trip or something so they’re safe for the moment.”

“That’s one small mercy at least,” Syler said. “Have you reported this?”

“I can’t. Not until I have some real proof. Doctor Brockman saw me and warned me off. It seems Nikky’s family is rich and influential and apparently that takes precedence over protecting a defenseless child from being beaten at home,” Megan said. She bit her lip and gazed out over the town. “But I’m not going to back down. I’m not going to let this go until both Nikky and Mrs. Okamoto are away from that violent bastard and safe.”

“Good, don’t let him intimidate you,” Syler said. “You know I’m behind you one hundred percent, so if Charles wants a fight, he’s got one.”

“Thanks, but I hope it doesn’t come to that.” Megan turned around and leaned back against Syler. A happy thrill started up in her belly as Syler wrapped her arms around her and pulled Megan close. Megan enjoyed the intimacy of Syler’s warmth at her back for a few heartbeats. She remembered the afternoon’s events and gave a shy laugh.

“He caught me bumming a smoke from Fabia and gave me a health lecture with bonus guilt-trips about not giving my future husband the children he deserves.”

Syler snorted and said, “That sounds like Charles. Always knowing better than everybody else. You won’t catch him with any bad habits.”

“Oh no, not mister perfect,” Megan said.
