Chapter 12
Carbon
11.18.19
7:30 p.m.
For the first time in my life, Iâm excited at the prospect of something huge that I can sink my teeth into, both figuratively and literally.
The past half hour has been an interesting game in denial. Weâre sitting around the table having a meal pretending everythingâs normal, even though we glance at Myrrâs spot where she would have sat, had this prophecy not stolen her from us. Her spot has her place setting and Aiden went as far as filling her glass with her favourite rosé wine. We steal glances at the spot, hoping that somehow sheâd appear, smiling behind a raised wine glass and admiring her family. Yet the only presence of her are found in the whispers of the moment. I catch glimpses of her in Aidenâs gestures and Willowâs side profile. I see her in Hunterâs melancholy eyes and can feel her in Declanâs anguish. I miss her so profoundly, it physically hurts. I crave her smile and wish to see the sparkle in her eyes. I miss catching her staring at me and how sheâd wink when no one was watching. I miss her earthy smell and her music. Even though thereâs music on in the background, it doesnât sound the same without her in the room.
I long for her hugs and hands that have squeezed my arms a million times. I miss the voice that would beg me to be careful. She always knew, almost before I did, when I was itching for danger.
âBring my Carbon back to me in one piece, ok?â sheâd whisper. And I would always have her voice in the back of my head, reminding me that I had too many women in my life that needed me. I was loved.
Now, I feel a little lost.
âPass me the mashed potatoes, dickhead,â Dane casually interrupts my thoughts.
Iâm kicked out of my own head and back into the moment. I do as Iâm asked, not before dipping my finger in and helping myself to a generous serving.
âBastard,â Dane chuckles.
âAnytime, asshole.â
Dane helps himself to not one, but three scoops. I hear a soft chuckle come from Sabine, and Iâm relieved to see her spirits are a little better. Little does anyone know, earlier this morning when I was doing some work in the office, I caught Sabine going for a run and went out to greet her. One conversation led to another, and the next thing you know, I have her securely in an embrace as she breaks down in my arms.
Iâve always had this knack for getting people to open up to me and tell me everything.
I spent the better part of the morning trying to convince her that there was nothing wrong with her. Sheâs been silently falling apart.
I look at Dane and wonder if heâs noticed how much Sabine has changed too. Everyoneâs focused on Willow and Shiva, without paying much attention to her, as itâs always been.
While lost in my thoughts, I hadnât realized the table went uncharacteristically silent.
