I always had the ideology to grow up, be married, have kids and live happily ever after. I did that in 1985, I got married and it lasted two and a half years, the marriage itself. I was working at a nightclub and this woman walked in, and from the first time I liked her. The second time she walked and I was just taken by her. I had a normal wedding, what you would call a normal wedding. It cost about $15,000 this wedding, a lot of money. It was at the Greek church on Franklin Street. I got baptised Greek. There was no translation for Gary in the Greek translation to be baptised. So I was baptised Gabriel, hence Gabreiella.

It was after that my childhood ambitions and dreams disintegrated. I was at the point of virtually just wanting to kill myself, to knock myself off. It was deeply personal because I couldn’t be that other and transition. Suddenly this dream of living happily ever after, kids in the family and the wife, that suddenly disappeared. Both things were a non-reality. My life was basically destroyed, so I was struggling right then and there to rebuild myself emotionally, because I cried for months. Probably two to three months after the marriage broke up and I was just distraught I couldn’t see any future. I had two bags of clothes in the wardrobe and girl’s clothes. She was aware of my cross dressing to a point. She knew I was bisexual.
