I got Willie took care of an’ went walkin’ back toward the office. On the way, I passed the drygoods store an’ went in. They was a lady behind the counter that called me Marshal an’ asked if she could help me.

“Yes M’am,” I said. “I just run across a couple a fellas that’d been out west a ways, an’ they was wearin’ pants that had rivets at the edges a the pockets. Seems to me that them pockets, bein’ riveted an’ all, would be a lot harder to tear out.”

She smiled an’ took some folded dark blue pants off a shelf behind her an ’laid ‘em on the counter.

“We haven’t carried these for very long,” she said. “They come from California. They’re made by a man named Levi Strauss and are called waist overalls. They have riveted pockets and a riveted fly. They even have a little pocket for your watch, if you carry one, two pockets on the front, two more on the back, and loops to pass a belt through.”

I was some took with them pants. They only come in blue, she tolt me, although at one time a fella could have got some brown ones out west, but not no more. Them two pockets on the backside would be right handy, an’ them belt loops was just fine, me not bein’ partial to suspenders an’ all. I bought two pairs a that Strauss fella’s pants at a dollar an’ a half each, an’ a fine belt a mulehide for a dollar an’ a quarter. I was near back to the roomin’ house to put a pair on to wear instead a just try like I done at the store, when I seen Marion come out. He was walkin’ kindly light an’ didn’t seem terrible spry.
