WHEN THEY ARRIVED AT the school it was surrounded by police, students, teachers, reporters, gawkers and yellow police tape. No one noticed as they passed through the crowd and into the school. The front entranceway was bathed in blood.
Jeremy remembered that the principal had been at the front door, greeting everyone as usual. He had been smiling until he saw the hunting rifle levelled at him. Jeremy had wanted to laugh at how there hadnât been time for that smile to vanish completely before Jeremy took the top of his head off with one shot from his dadâs rifle. After that, there had been total pandemonium; people screaming and running. Jeremy had laughed then. It had been the first time in his life he had felt empowered.
He hadnât stay long, enough time to shoot everyone within range before leaving. There wasnât any point in going any farther into the school. There was bound to be someone there who thought they were a hero or something. All he had ever wanted to do was to make a point. Now they all knew he existed and no one would ever forget his name.â
âI want to go back home.â A policeman rushed by and so Jeremy took a step back to get out of his way.
His grandmother shook her head. âNot before you tell me why.â
He rolled his eyes. âPay back of course. They all hated me even though none of them knew the first thing about me. So what that I wasnât a football or basketball player? So what if I didnât make straight As or was good-looking or cool. No one ever wanted to know the real me. Not even the teachers. I was invisible to everyone until they needed someone to mock.â
He stared out the front door at the crying mob. âTheyâll never mock me again. Today I was someone. Today I made a difference.â
âAnd how is that?â
âI made them stop and think about what they did and said. Today, I bet theyâre out there right now, wondering why and if itâs their fault.â
She shook her head. âNo. Right now theyâre out there mourning people they loved. Youâre still nothing to them. You didnât solve anything.â
âThatâs not true.â
She offered him her hand again. âLetâs go home. Maybe then youâll understand.â
