CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Jennifer “Chainsaw” Breslin power-walked to the receptionist’s desk and smiled as the woman looked up.

“May I help you?”

“Yes, please. Would you let Dexter Morse know that Chainsaw is here to see him?”

The woman furrowed her brow. “Excuse me? Your name is Chainsaw?”

“He’ll know who it is. I have an appointment.”

The receptionist shrugged. “Okay.” She hit the button for the intercom. “Mister Morse, a Ms. Chainsaw to see you.”

“Send her right up.”

The woman looked up at Breslin. “I guess you can head to his office.” She handed her a visitor badge. “Fourth floor, in the newsroom.”

“Thanks. Have a nice day.” Breslin clipped the badge to her lapel, walked across the hall to the elevator and rode to her destination. The sound of keyboards clicking and loud conversation filled the air as the door opened. She spotted Dexter Morse on the phone through the glass walls of his corner office and headed in that direction.

He hung up the phone just as she reached the door. “Jennifer, you’re looking well.”

She smiled as she entered the office and took a seat in front of his desk. “You too. I must say, I didn’t expect to find you in an actual newsroom.”

“I didn’t expect to be here either, but I love the energy of the place and this lets me keep a close eye on things. Though I have a great staff. Speaking of employees, how are things at your new assignment?”

“Well, there’s not much stress since I unloaded most of the staff at the network you bought.”

“Most? You mean a few actually stuck around?”

“Two of the anchors simply want a paycheck.”

“I didn’t know any of those people were still on the air.”

She crossed her legs and rocked a red pump on her toe. “Oh, they’re not. I assigned them to podcasts, which, sadly, always seem to have technical problems when you try to play them. Or the podcasts get deleted. Unfortunately, our technical people have not been able to resolve the issue.” She flashed a wicked smile. “Don’t worry, eventually they’ll get frustrated being virtual trees falling in the electronic forest and quit.”

Morse chuckled a bit. “Your creativity regarding personnel always amazes me. So, what brings you by today?”

“I have an idea that might help you recoup some of the cash you spent on the place.”

“That would be nice.”

“Well, while viewership is up and our ad sales are doing well, we’re missing one thing a lot of the news networks are doing.”

“What’s that?”

“Book sales. Most of their hosts are pitching books, and making a fortune. Of course, most of them are ghostwritten, but that’s not the point.”

“But you no longer have any hosts.”

“Right. However, there are a whole bunch of conservative authors who lost book deals with major publishers thanks to the woke mob on social media demanding they be canceled. Most are politicians, political insiders or conservatives with a huge following. Anyway, there are all these great books out there that need a home. And there’s a house for sale. Which is not a fixer-upper.
