Mitchum and Flagg had been riding blind, unable to pick up the trail of Mulligan and the others, but knowing that if they kept on going, Mulligan would be tracking them. As they approached the lower slopes of the Moccasins Mitchum detected sign.
âTwo horses,â he said. âQuestion is, is it some more of the Black Valley Forge gang or someone else?â
âDonât seem likely that thereâd be other riders up here,â Flagg replied.
The sign seemed to indicate that the riders had come from a different direction to the one they had been following.
âJudginâ by the way theyâre headed, they could be aiminâ for Red Rock,â Mitchum said.
He paused before adding: âMaybe itâs time we split up.â
The oldster scratched his chin.
âNow just why do you figure that?â he said.
âBecause Mulligan wonât be expectinâ it.â
âSo what you got in mind for me?â
Mitchum continued to weigh up the situation.
âI figure you should follow this sign. If Iâm right, itâll take you to Red Rock.â
âWhat then?â
Mitchum shrugged.
âI donât know. Thatâs why you should go. See if you can pick up anythinâ.â
The oldster glanced about him.
âAnd what about you? Are you carryinâ on into the Moccasins?â
âYeah. I got a hunch about that lost loot and I want to follow it up.â
âHow longâs that gonna take you?â
âI ainât sure. Could depend on what Mulligan has in mind. Letâs give it a couple of days. Thatâll give us both time. Iâll see you in Dutch Peteâs saloon at sundown in two dayâs time.â
âDutch Pete? You figure Iâll find the place all right? You ainât been in Red Rock for a while.â
âDonât worry, youâll find it,â Mitchum laughed.
âSounds like Iâm gettinâ the best of this arrangement. Wouldnât say no to a night or two between the sheets.â
âJust be careful whose sheets they are,â Mitchum said.
Flagg regarded him with a look which was suddenly serious.
âMake sure youâre there at Dutch Peteâs,â he said. âDonât forget that Mulligan might be foolinâ about some but in the end heâs out to get you.â
Mitchumâs eyes were cold steel.
âI ainât likely to forget that,â he said.
The two of them shook hands and then stepped into leather. Neither of them looked back as they rode off in their separate directions. Michum was wondering whether Mulligan had been observing the scene. Whether he was or not, events were drawing to some sort of climax and that was one more reason why he had wanted the oldster out of the way. Whatever Flagg had said, Mitchum still considered it was his affair. Now that a confrontation with the Black Valley Forge gang was imminent, he owed it to the oldster to consider his safety. It was a slim chance that the sign he had detected had anything to do with the Black Valley Forge gang. Instinctively reaching for his rifle, he set his course for the higher ranges.
