Mitchum and Flagg had been riding blind, unable to pick up the trail of Mulligan and the others, but knowing that if they kept on going, Mulligan would be tracking them. As they approached the lower slopes of the Moccasins Mitchum detected sign.

‘Two horses,’ he said. ‘Question is, is it some more of the Black Valley Forge gang or someone else?’

‘Don’t seem likely that there’d be other riders up here,’ Flagg replied.

The sign seemed to indicate that the riders had come from a different direction to the one they had been following.

‘Judgin’ by the way they’re headed, they could be aimin’ for Red Rock,’ Mitchum said.

He paused before adding: ‘Maybe it’s time we split up.’

The oldster scratched his chin.

‘Now just why do you figure that?’ he said.

‘Because Mulligan won’t be expectin’ it.’

‘So what you got in mind for me?’

Mitchum continued to weigh up the situation.

‘I figure you should follow this sign. If I’m right, it’ll take you to Red Rock.’

‘What then?’

Mitchum shrugged.

‘I don’t know. That’s why you should go. See if you can pick up anythin’.’

The oldster glanced about him.

‘And what about you? Are you carryin’ on into the Moccasins?’

‘Yeah. I got a hunch about that lost loot and I want to follow it up.’

‘How long’s that gonna take you?’

‘I ain’t sure. Could depend on what Mulligan has in mind. Let’s give it a couple of days. That’ll give us both time. I’ll see you in Dutch Pete’s saloon at sundown in two day’s time.’

‘Dutch Pete? You figure I’ll find the place all right? You ain’t been in Red Rock for a while.’

‘Don’t worry, you’ll find it,’ Mitchum laughed.

‘Sounds like I’m gettin’ the best of this arrangement. Wouldn’t say no to a night or two between the sheets.’

‘Just be careful whose sheets they are,’ Mitchum said.

Flagg regarded him with a look which was suddenly serious.

‘Make sure you’re there at Dutch Pete’s,’ he said. ‘Don’t forget that Mulligan might be foolin’ about some but in the end he’s out to get you.’

Mitchum’s eyes were cold steel.

‘I ain’t likely to forget that,’ he said.

The two of them shook hands and then stepped into leather. Neither of them looked back as they rode off in their separate directions. Michum was wondering whether Mulligan had been observing the scene. Whether he was or not, events were drawing to some sort of climax and that was one more reason why he had wanted the oldster out of the way. Whatever Flagg had said, Mitchum still considered it was his affair. Now that a confrontation with the Black Valley Forge gang was imminent, he owed it to the oldster to consider his safety. It was a slim chance that the sign he had detected had anything to do with the Black Valley Forge gang. Instinctively reaching for his rifle, he set his course for the higher ranges.
