Chapter 17

The wind blew through her dark hair as Brittany sat in the passenger’s seat of the open-topped Jeep Wrangler that Levi let her use. She let Gary drive so she could try to relax. The sunny September sky poured warm rays into the vehicle, and Brittany closed her eyes as the sunlight caressed her face.

Since their time together on the bluff last evening, Brittany’s insides were a jumbled mess. His comments about love and the desire she saw in his eyes had made the rest of the evening awkward. After exchanging phone numbers before he left last night, she almost cancelled the hike today. Even this morning, she debated. However, after talking with her mother, she decided to keep the date.

“Even if you only enjoy the outing, it will be worth it,” Erin had said. “It never hurts to try. Remember how it was for Mike and me those first few weeks? I was a wreck! But then I thought, ‘What a blessing to have this man’s love!’ If Gary is trying to tell you he loves you, be thankful. Perhaps he is the one, perhaps not, but you’ll never know until you spend more time with him. And again, if you don’t feel drawn to him today, just enjoy the hike. Yellowstone in autumn is grand! Perhaps tomorrow or the next day you’ll find yourself falling in love. Again, look at Mike and me. I’m so thankful I didn’t decide to run.”

“Tomorrow Gary will be up in the mountains and staying several days.”

“All the better! You just might miss him.”

“Enjoying yourself?”

Gary’s question startled her, and she opened her eyes. Instead of looking at him, she kept her gaze on the passing trees.

“Yes. The breeze feels good, the air smells wonderful, and the sound of the water is relaxing.”

“Listen, I apologize again if I made you uncomfortable last night, with all that talk about love and romance.”

She glanced at him. His hands gripped the steering wheel and he unclenched then clenched again.

“It’s just that, well, it’s been a while since I’ve been on a date, and, at my age, well, sometimes I’ve begun to wonder if there’s really anyone out there for me.”

“Your age? Good grief, Gary, you’re not old!”

“I’m likely older than you think. I’m almost thirty-four.”

“Really? You don’t look it. I didn’t think you were thirty yet.”

He smiled.

“Well, thanks. I spent a few years between my bachelor’s and master’s degrees working on my grandfather’s ranch as well as the fish hatchery. So, I wasn’t the typical master’s student, going into a program directly after getting a bachelor's degree.”

“Where’s your grandfather’s ranch?”

“Central Idaho. I spent quite a bit of time there as a boy. It’s where I developed my conservation ethic.”

“Really? On a ranch? That’s interesting.”

“My granddad was a conservationist long before most in the ranching arena, at least in that part of Idaho. He saw how cattle impacted wetlands and stream beds, so he was one to rotate grazing areas a long time ago. He was the person who helped me understand the connection.
