With increased holiday traffic, I knew in order to reach the rehab center near Healthwell by three that afternoon I had to leave by two. Since I woke up early and thought I had little to do, two o’clock would be a piece of cake. Or would it? A knock on my front door was about to interrupt my newly acquired piece of mind.

Knock. Knock. Knock. Sam got wind of this way before I did and ran to the front door barking. I opened the door a crack to see a delivery guy in uniform holding a gigantic cardboard box. “Ms. Jessica Munroe?”

Since he wasn’t from the pound or the sheriff’s department, I nodded. He put the box down and handed me his clipboard. “Please sign here, ma’am.”

I took his clipboard and signed my name. He tipped his hat which I thought was old fashioned but cute before going on his way. Now how on earth am I going to get this thing in the house?

I heard a car in my driveway. Oh great! More company to disturb my peaceful morning. I felt my blood pressure rise when I recognized Jake’s black jaguar. Not him again, but at least this time he’ll be good for something since, if nothing else, he was physically strong. Jake got out of his car whistling. He saw me on the porch and waved as happy as a clam.

“Great news!” he yelled out to me. “She said, ‘yes.’”

Why on earth he thought I’d be happy about that, I don’t know. He bounced onto the porch, threw his arms around me, and lifted me to give me a big bear hug. I fought like a bear, pounding on his shoulders for him to put me back down.

“Easy Jess, you know I wouldn’t hurt you.” He put me down “You are the best…the very best. I gave Barbie the engagement ring. Please may I come in and tell you all about it?”

I was surprised he thought I’d enjoy hearing about this but at the very least this was my big chance to get help with that enormous package.

“Jake, this package just arrived, and I wondered if you’d help me drag it inside.”

Jake looked at the package. “Wow, that is one big box. Supplies for the party? That’s one of the other things I wanted to talk to you about.”

I shook my head “no” to party supplies as he picked up this enormous box and carried it inside to my front hallway.

“Thank you for helping with that.”

I thought at the very least, he’s strong enough to move that box if nothing else. He placed the box down in my hall and started to head for my kitchen, but I held my hand up like a school crossing guard to stop him from entering my house any further than the front hall. “Jake, I thought I made this clear. I want nothing more to do with you and couldn't care less about hearing about your proposal to Barbie. Why you want to open those sore wounds that broke my heart, I can’t imagine.
