PART THREE: The Life of Paul
We get most of our information about Paul from the New Testament book of the Acts of the Apostles and from Paulâs own letters written during his lifetime to the churches of Asia Minor. It is traditionally believed that the author of Acts was Luke the Evangelist and that it was written sometime during the second half of the 1st century; this would mean sometime around the latter part of Paulâs life. The book covers the growth of the early Church and sets it within the Graeco/Roman world, with frequent reference to Roman emperors and governors of the time.
There are thirteen Letters, or Epistles; seven of which are generally accepted as being written by Paul, while authorship of the remaining six is less certain. We probably get our best image of the man Paul from his own letters, which were not only autobiographical, but also beautifully written, giving us some outstanding poetry.
Throughout these writings there is reference to Roman Emperors, Governors, Procurators and laws and it is from these references that we are able to locate Paul and his experiences fairly accurately.
The work of the Jewish historian Josephus, who lived between AD 37 and AD 100, and the Roman historian Tacitus, who lived between AD 56 and AD 117, also make reference to the same events, which helps us to build a more complete picture of the man Paul.
