CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I wanted to scream her name but I held my emotions in check because both Giovalde and I wanted to observe silence in our flights. So, I whispered. “Lady of the Garden, it is so good to see you.”

“Likewise, my lord,” she spoke in her wee butterfly voice. “I’m sorry I didn’t answer when you called. The rest of the Order has joined with Troy. I was scared.”

“No worries, my Lady,” I replied tenderly. “I’ll take care of you now.”

“Where are we going, lord?” she asked.

“We are in search of Troy and the Order of Onyx Dragons so we can do battle with them,” I said.

“Oh,” she hesitantly whispered.

“I can take you back, my lady.”

“No, my lord. I was hoping you’d take me to Lori. I really need to go to her. She needs me.”

“We left her with a healer,” I expressed to her.

“And she needs me,” she insisted.

I knew what she’d said was true. She had been with Lori throughout her training as a witch and through all the darkest years of her depression. Only recently were they separated. I sped up to catch Giovalde. “We need to go back to Lori.”

He looked at me in shocked amazement and openly questioned my good judgment, “My lord, have you lost your mind? Lady Hicks was adamant that we leave. We cannot return. What would give you such an idea?”

I turned my face towards him and he saw the butterfly perched on my nose holding on to my scales tightly with its spindly legs. He shot me a quizzical expression. “The Lady of the Garden requests a one way trip,” I told him. He nodded in understanding and we immediately changed course back towards where Lori was holed up.

When we reached the skies over the witch’s run down shack, Giovalde motioned for me to take the Lady down while he stayed above to keep watch. I lowered my head and zoomed towards the ground. “I cannot stay, my lady. I’ll drop you off and then you’ll be on your own. The old witch is named Sally Hicks and she is quite grumpy.”

She laughed at my last comment and replied, “I know her well. She was Lady Strum’s sister. I’ll happily offer her my assistance with dear Lori.”

“Very well then,” I hovered just above the trees surrounding the witch’s shack. “I wish you well.”

“Thank you for bringing me here, lord,” she gently replied as she lifted off from her perch on my nose.

“I’ll return to check on you soon, my lady,” I told her as I flew towards Giovalde. I didn’t look back, but had much confidence she’d find peace in the overrun meadows surrounding Lady Hicks’s shack.

After being unable to locate our enemies, we dropped our pretense of observing silence. “How are we going to find them?” I asked my tactical expert, Giovalde.

“We need an oracle.”

“Like that’s possible,” I smirked at what I took to be sarcasm.

“It may be possible.”

“Explain yourself.”

“Legend has it that a long dead Native Indian prophet from the Adena tribe will answer specific questions if the proper sacrifices are offered.
