Chapter fifteen
Chloe turned to the room and looked at each of them individually. She did it before speaking and that meant taking ten or fifteen seconds to get the job done. She didn’t focus on Sebastian at the end, either, looking at Marc, Vina and Richard again instead. Her face was a bit stricken seeming, as if she were trying to pretend to be a lot more worried and worked up than she really was. It was credible acting but felt a little off.
Over the top. Like she was attempting to manipulate them all with her feelings. Except that she didn’t really feel the way she was projecting at them.
“That was Jan… Her son is all right. He was in the shooting though earlier. He… They’re all pretty shaken up. She wanted to know if some of us could go and stay with her and the others for a few days. A week or so? I know that we’re getting ready for the winter schedule…” She said it as if it were a dark thing.
As if they couldn’t possibly leave when a set of new shows was about to be coming out. Not for that shallow of a reason. After all, it wasn’t going to actually help anyone at all, some of their people driving for days to go and sit around with their old friends. They were actors and actresses, not crisis counselors.
Sebastian sort of understood anyway. Janice was a people person. Frank was a bit weak seeming as far as men went, as well. That meant the woman, who was nice enough over all, if not the kind of person that Sebastian appreciated much in life, might just want some people around to make up for the manliness that her husband lacked.
Not that it was a great crime, most of the time. Guys didn’t have to be macho idiots to be important or useful to the world. It was just that in that moment, when their lives were being threatened, Jan and possibly even Frank and their kids, might like to have some stronger people around them for a bit.
There was a real problem with the shooting schedule. Instead of getting all worked up about it, Sebastian just shrugged.
“Can you leave Wednesday morning? That way we can finish shooting tomorrow and do the editing and music for everything while you’re gone. We’ll also have to free up some funds for the trip. That and pack you all off with food. Weapons, too. Who all is going?”
There was a core group that Chloe seemed to be favoring. That being Marcus, Rick and Vina. That left out Hal, who had actually been decently close to Frank for a few weeks, if Sebastian had it right. Sebastian had been close to the fellow as well. That part, well, he hadn’t been that close to the couple, when they’d been there. They’d been nice enough but married and kind of prone to sleeping around.
At least Janice had been. Frank had spent a lot of nights out on the sofa, while his wife entertained other people in a different room.
