DWAYNE

Dwayne sat in the passenger seat of Nico’s hire car, and he could only watch as Nico turned towards him and threw himself at him.

Nico landed on top of Dwayne. He grabbed the sides of his face. He dug his long fingernails into the sides of Dwayne’s head, making it split with pain. The metallic tang of blood filled the confines of the car, mingling with the acrid stench of sweat.

Dwayne pushed back against Nico. For a man who’d just passed out right beside him, he had an awful lot of strength right now. Nico’s teeth snapped together. His eyes protruded from his skull. His breath smelled awful, like bins left out in the summer sun.

And he was getting closer to Dwayne’s neck.

Closer to… to biting him? Biting him just like he’d bitten Gary? And just like he’d been bitten?

“Nico,” Dwayne gasped. “It’s—it’s me, man. It’s me.”

But Nico didn’t seem to hear. He just kept on pushing Dwayne back in his seat. Dwayne pushed him back with all his strength, stretching out his arms to hold him back.

But Nico kept on pushing.

Nico kept on pressing his bony arm against Dwayne’s neck. Choking him. Making it hard to breathe. Impossible to breathe.

Dwayne’s heart raced. His temples pulsated. His neck ached. He tried to gasp for air, tried to inhale, but he couldn’t, he just couldn’t.

He closed his burning eyes and he saw…

Mum.

Mum, in that nursing home.

The fear in her eyes.

“I just—I just want to get out,” she said. “I just want to get out.”

He pushed back against Nico. Pushed back, as hard as he could.

And then he jolted forward.

An almighty crash exploded in the car.

The sound of glass smashing and metal crumbling surrounded him.

And… and that pressure. That pressure, holding him down. It’d gone. He was… he was free.

He opened his eyes.

The cars in front looked different, somehow. He glanced up in the rear-view. The rear windshield was in pieces. There was a bus behind him. It’s alarm ringing out, piercing. That bus wasn’t there before. It must’ve—it must’ve slammed into Nico’s car.

Shit. He hoped Nico had the cash to cover the costs. He could use his share of the…

Wait. No. What the hell was he even thinking?

Somehow, he had a feeling recouping the cost of a hire car was going to be the least of the rental place’s concerns the way things were going.

But that windshield. That broken windshield. And—and the lack of pressure on his chest.

He had an opportunity.

He had a chance.

He had…

A gasp.

A grunt, from…

Wait. That wasn’t from Nico.

It was.

A figure.

A figure, appearing at the passenger window.

Standing up. Rising, out of nowhere.

Gary.

Only… Gary didn’t look like he looked before. There was none of the screaming after just having his arm gnawed on by a possessed Nico. And his arm looked in a pretty terrible state. Leaking a shitload of blood.

And…

His eyes.

His eyes were dead. Grey. He looked in Dwayne’s vague direction. But he didn’t look at Dwayne.

He looked… through Dwayne.

Dwayne looked back at him. Then at Nico, who scrambled from side to side on the dashboard.
