Finishing with his goodbyes, Knox left to join Terris and Tress at the farm he’d left them at. They’d returned already, each of them with a pack on their back, matching the one Knox carried now, filled with supplies.

“So, where will we find this Zhul fellow?” Knox asked, wondering what direction their journey would take.

“Last I heard, he was working under the king as a personal bodyguard, but I think he’d rather come with us,” Tress said with a devious smile on her face.

“You want to go to the capital city of Laurdenar and poach the king’s personal bodyguard?” Knox asked, disbelief not hidden on his face.

“It’s probably best I go alone,” Tress said, smiling now at her brother. “He’s got beef with my brother and doesn’t take kindly to surprises, so I’ll have to work at him until I can get him to come. It won’t take longer than a day, two tops, plenty of time for you two to make it to the dungeon and get us registered.”

“So, I don’t have to go?” Knox said, feeling relief wash over him. He’d only had limited contact with nobles and their kind, but he’d seen enough to last him a lifetime.

“I’ll lead the way, try to keep up,” Terris said, but Knox just smirked because he knew he could outrun the man with his hands tied behind his back.

Terris took off at a blazing pace, kicking up debris as he went, and Knox followed after him. It had been a long time since he’d been able to cut loose while running, and his speed was something altogether different now. Several times, he nearly fell. His footfalls were so wide that he was practically skipping across the ground, leaping over buildings and wagons that got in the way.

Terris was fast, but not as fast nor did he have the strength to jump as high or far as Knox, so he caught up to him in no time. At this pace, the monthlong journey would take no longer than a few days; at least, that was what Knox thought after doing a quick bit of calculations.

By the end of day one, they’d traveled countless miles and left his friends in the dust. Terris and Knox were both winded from going all out for so many hours, but Knox recovered first, and shortly after that so did Terris. It was amazing what you could do when you really cut loose, Knox mused.

By the end of the second day, they’d already reached the dungeon, and Knox marveled at how different it was from the Mire’s Gloom Dungeon. Instead of a town, it was a simple building with a single guard. No shops or buildings were built around it, only the ruins of a long-deserted city. Stone foundations were left bare, and the remains of a tower some two hundred paces south of the dungeon hut that hid the dungeon pillar.

“What can I do for you, gentlemen?” asked the guard, who sat reading a book without looking up.
