Acrylic

This is a good choice for tinting acrylic-based grounds. It dries to a permanent surface and has good saturation. The concern when using acrylic paint is its tendency to fill the tooth, leaving a slick, unreceptive ground for applying the pastel. However, if you use considerable water, as is customary with a traditional watercolor technique, acrylic can be quite exciting, because you can attain high chroma, and the acrylic ground will form a permanent film once it has dried.

Gouache

Gouache lets you use traditional water-color technique, and its higher chroma (due to its opaque nature) makes it a favorite with many prominent pastel artists.
