Chapter Thirteen

“The rebels are getting bolder!” a senator shouted.

“Why don’t we just send our armies to wipe them out?” another senator asked.

“We don’t have the money to fund another war!” a senator snapped. “The treasure is empty!”

The emperor frowned as he listened to the senators argue among themselves. He had summoned them all here today after hearing of the marriage of Kaiser’s daughter to the son of one of the most powerful Germanic chiefs. He had spies watching their so-called ‘city’, and though he wanted to feel angry with Kaiser, he could not help but feel a bit proud. It turned out the German wasn’t a mindless brute, as most thought he was when he was in Rome. Yet, this was a danger to all the empire, as the Vandals had hundreds of thousands under their command.

“What do you suggest?” a senator asked. “We let these slaves continue this abomination? They are becoming a symbol of rebellion in our empire! Our own slaves, for all we know, might be planning with them! They might be planning to slit our throats!”

“I doubt that will happen,” the emperor said loudly. “I’m sure they fear our punishments.”

For almost a decade, the Senate had passed several laws that heavily restricted the lives of their slaves. They had a curfew, were forced to carry papers if they had to leave their residences, gatherings with more than two members were forbidden, and more. The slightest offence, such as raising their voices above a certain pitch, was given the punishment of no less than five lashes on the post.

They wanted to break the spirits of their slaves until they were nothing more than lifeless husks until this storm passed over. If it passed over, that is.

“What do you suggest then, my lord?” a senator asked the emperor. “The treasury is empty from your constant wars, in which last time I checked, have not gained us any important land.”

The emperor narrowed his eyes and grit his teeth. “I was protecting our interests. Something that I have always done!”

“And have seemingly nothing to show for it,” a senator argued. “Not only that, but you have no heir.”

“Excuse me?” the emperor asked.

“You made your son kill himself, and your daughter fled with the enemy!” a senator pointed out. “What do you have to show for it? Keeping your son’s wife around?”

“What I do with my personal life is none of your business,” the emperor growled. “I was chosen by the gods to rule all of Rome, not you. So, I suggest you stay in your place. This meeting is over.”

Aurelia was brushing her hair when the emperor came into their bedchamber. She could tell that the Senate meeting did not go well, and mentally groaned. It was going to take a lot of sex to cool down his temper tonight.

“I am guessing the Senate did not agree with you today, my lord?” Aurelia asked softly, bowing her head and batting her eyelashes.

“They talk to me as if I’m not chosen by the gods to rule this empire!” he roared.
