Chapter 14
Kim
I shoot up the trail at full blast. Emily lets out a breathless laugh as I pull my hand out of her grasp to take the lead.
We continue like that the whole way back to the car, laughing, shrieking, and weaving in and out of first place as we zoom up the shadow-streaked path. By the time we slam up against the truck, Iâm grinning so hard my face hurts as I fight to catch my breath.
âI think,â I say between gasps for air, âI won.â
She hunches over to brace her hands on her knees and glares at me. âNuh-uh. I totally won that.â
I shove my hair off my sweaty forehead and lean against the passenger side door. âWell, even if you did, youâre the one who got a head start, so I win by default because you cheated.â
She straightens up and puffs her chest out. âOkay, sore loser.â
I place a hand on my chest and pretend to be shocked. âOh no, you didnât.â
She squeals when I lunge forward to pin her arms to her sides and then whirl her around to press her up against the truck just like I had her against the tree.
She pouts and blows a stray lock of hair out of her eyes.
âWell, now look whoâs the sore loser,â I say, somehow managing to give the illusion of keeping my cool.
âYouâre going to have to let me go if you want in the truck. I have the keys.â
She tilts her chin up and gives me a defiant stare that seems to heat up the air around us by several degrees.
I loosen my grip on her arms for a fraction of a second. Just when her expression has started to shift into a triumphant gloat, I capture both her wrists and lift them above her head to pin them down with one of my hands.
She could probably break free if she wanted, but she squirms and lets out a breathy gasp of elation at the restraint.
I lean in close to her ear and murmur, âLetâs see if I can find those keys.â
I use my free hand to pat down the front of her jacket, taking my time and avoiding all the places Iâm sure sheâd like me to touch her most. I unzip the jacketâs pockets and make sure to brush her ribcage through the thin fabric as I search them both.
Sheâs breathing even heavier than before, and I see the tendons in her neck flex when I trail my hand even lower to run my fingers under the waistband of her leggings.
âThese donât have pockets, do they?â I ask. âI better check to make sure.â
I slide my hand around to palm her ass, and she groans. She struggles against my grip on her wrists for a moment, her hips bucking up to meet mine. I squeeze her ass hard and shift so Iâm standing with one of my thighs pressed between her legs.
All the fight goes out of her when I lean forward enough to put pressure just where she needs it.
