JOHNSON HAD SETTLED down, sleeping in the back. Benjamin sat next to Melissa, up front, as she drove. The two didn’t speak until they’d retraced their path along the gravel road and were on the highway, following the winding river, heading south.

“They seemed kind of relieved,” she said, “to be talking about it all. Did you feel that?”

“They were hoping we were about to leave and we wouldn’t come back.” Benjamin picked up the flashlight, rolling near his feet, and returned it to the glove compartment. “And why’d you say you were Helen?”

“Did that bother you?”

“No,” he said. “It was surprising, is all.”

“It did bother you.”

“I guess so. A little.”

“Well,” Melissa said, “if I’d tried to explain who I actually am and why I was there—that would’ve slowed everything down, confused it, and we might never have gotten where we needed to go. Mostly I wanted to startle them a little, to put them on the defensive, so they would talk.”

“They were definitely startled.”

“It worked. I mean, I believe what they said, that they told us everything they could.”

“I wish they’d said all that when it happened. It might have changed how everything went, between me and Helen.”

“Did she ever say anything about them? About what happened, there?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “Not to me. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t remember.”
