Later, after they all cleaned up the dinner dishes, Russel said, “Let’s go milk the cows and goats. I did that kind of early this morning, so they’re probably already full again, but what do I know?”

They milked the three cows and the goats. Sure enough, the cats showed up for their treat. “That one’s Amber,” Fayth said as she squirted goat’s milk into a silver bowl on a low stool beneath her goat. “That one is Maggie, and the last one is…” Fayth looked at Russel. “They’re all girls?”

“Yep, they’re all spayed, and I’ve seen no stray males prowling around,” Russel told her.

“Hmm. The third one needs a good name, too.” Fayth placed the bowl with the warm milk on the floor, and all three cats lapped it. “Amber, Maggie, and the brown one. Hmm, what name should she have?”

“That cat is a rascal. She claws everything and tears up her bedding,” Russel said.

“Okay, I’ll name her Teri with one r and an i. Amber, Maggie, and Teri.”

“Okay. I hope I remember which one is which. So, it’s Maggie, Amber, and Teri. They’re our Cat Patrol.” Russel stood up and stretched his back. Shayla was finishing up the last cow.

“What do we do with this milk?” Fayth asked.

“We save a gallon for us and spill the rest in the ditch after we separate the cream for Cathy and our coffee.”

“What? Why?”

“Who are we going to give it to? William and Cathy already have too much milk. I think they dump most of what they harvest. We don’t know anyone to give it to and don’t want to make any more friends.”

Fayth looked at the three cats near her feet. She reached down and rubbed Amber’s back. “Nothing makes sense anymore. Too bad we didn’t give some to Charly and her friends.”

Russel gently took hold of Fay’s hand. “Look, kid. The thing is, we don’t want others to know what we have. We need to remain off the radar and look like we have very little when we meet others. Never brag or reveal what we have. We hope someday things will get better and we can share our milk. Milk cows and egg-laying chickens are worth more than their weight in gold.”

“I was afraid to use the shower, sink, or toilet upstairs. Do they all work?”

“Yes, the water is warm. But the water pressure is only half of what it used to be. I turned down the gas water heater to its minimum level,” Russel said.

“Maybe tomorrow we can go to the swimming hole?” Fayth asked.

“We can fit that in after all the chores. If tomorrow is like today, it’ll be nice to swim. I don’t let the cattle back there because they’d all be walking in there pooping and stuff, ruining the beach. Right now, the water is almost clean enough to drink.”

“I want to see this place and wear my new suit.”

“I have suntan lotion!” Shayla added.

They all watched Groundhog Day together on the laptop with popcorn and soda that night.
