Chapter Fourteen
Making the Cut
Paigeâs suspicion about Carly was confirmed as she arrived in the ER Saturday morning. It was Memorial Day weekend, and she was assigned to work the string of dayshifts from Saturday to Monday. She was relieving Reese, who worked the overnights.
âHow was the night?â she asked a red-eyed Reese.
âI got my ass whipped, and on top of that, I think Iâm getting a cold. Or maybe itâs just allergies. But Iâm sniffling, and my throat is sore, and my head hurts.â
She held up a hand and stepped back a foot. âTake some Vitamin C. Fast.â
âIs that big bottle still in the closet in the doctorsâ lounge?â
âI believe so.â She hoped it was still there. Sheâd bought it just for such occasions and hoped no one had taken it.
âI donât know if Iâm going to make it to Carlyâs party tomorrow. Iâll see how I feel, but I think sleep is more important than one of those famous margaritas.â
She tried to hide her surprise and thought she recovered well. âYes. The only mixed drink you should have is a Vitamin Water.â
âI think youâre right.â
âIâll see you in twenty-four hours. But listenâif you need me to come in a few hours early tomorrow, let me know. Five to three isnât much harder than seven to three for me, but it might give you a little help with whatever youâre battling.â
Reese visibly brightened. âHow about if I call you later? I should know in the next twelve hours which way this is going.â
âYou got it.â
Reese didnât have a single patient to sign out, so Paige went to work on the new ones. Her shift was much like Reeseâs had been, crazy busy, and she didnât have time to think about her morning conversation with Reese until she was changing in the physiciansâ lounge afterward.
Carly was having a party, and Paige wasnât invited. Not that she had any expectationsâthey werenât best friends, after all. But theyâd grown close in the three months theyâd known each other, close enough that Carly might mention she was hosting a get-together for her college friends, like Reese. Something. Anything other than the silent treatment sheâd been dealing with all week and the brush-off the day of the tournament in Hershey.
It was like a light switch had been flipped. One minute theyâd been enjoying the tranquility of the Hershey Gardens, spending time as friends do. The next, Carly behaved like she barely knew Paige and couldnât tolerate her. Since the tournament in Hershey, she had texted Carly several times. Finally, after about the fifth no-reply, sheâd given up. Apparently, Carly wanted nothing to do with her.
What had happened? Had she somehow angered Carly? She had a little crush on her, but Carly didnât know that. She had kept those feelings so closely guarded she wasnât even sure of them herself. Sometimes she looked at Carly and feltâ¦something. At other times, she was just a great friend, someone she connected with.
And, of course, she was married. When she was with Carly, she had to remind herself of that fact, because it was so easy to forget.
