Chapter 11

“What’s going on?” Rage built in Ciar’s chest. He’d seen the pain on Romeo’s face, and the fading scent of him made Ciar want to crack skulls. He couldn’t say exactly which emotion it was, but it had blood boiling in his veins.

He flashed teeth at Draven and Thano. “Who hurt Romeo?” He didn’t look at Humbert. He was a kitten, and he loved Romeo. He’d never voluntarily cause him pain.

“Humbert told him there was gonna be a vote.”

Ciar nodded. He’d learn about it soon enough anyway. “And?”

“And he said he’s doing the whole bank thing for us, but if we’re gonna stab him in the back, he doesn’t want to.” Draven slumped his shoulders.

“No one will stab him in the back. Breed don’t use knives, and I won’t let any humans near his back.” Why would he think anyone would use a knife on him?

Thano sighed. “It’s an expression. It means to betray someone.”

“Betray?” He wasn’t sure how they could betray Romeo.

“Use him. Take advantage of him, and when we’ve gotten what we want, we’ll throw him away. You want to start a business, so you can sell meat and get money. You’ll take him to the bank today, have him sign papers and promise to follow the law and so on. It’s a lot of work for him, and then tonight you’ll chase him away and leave him to die.”

Ciar growled. “We will not leave him to die.”

“What happens if Tatwulf wins the vote?” Thano looked at him, and Ciar stilled.

It couldn’t happen. “He has the key.”

“Which I’ve told you all along, but Tatwulf called for a vote, and you all agreed.”

“I did not!” Ciar snarled.

“Because you weren’t there. You were with Romeo.” Thano’s face was blank and Ciar had no idea if he thought Ciar had made the wrong decision or not.

“What should I have done? Left him? Wolves attacked his home.”

“I know. Are you gonna stay with him every night? Every day? Guard him all the time so no wolves can attack?”

Ciar narrowed his eyes. “Maybe.” It sounded like a good option. He hadn’t liked leaving Romeo this morning. He’d looked warm and cozy in his bed, and Ciar had to stop himself from nuzzling him before he’d crept out to hunt down Draven.

Thano nodded. “And you think he’ll believe you? Especially now when he’s learned the people he sat and read to yesterday evening plan to vote about whether he gets to stay or not.”

“Will he not read to us?” Humbert got up, and Ciar noted he had half a toast in his hand. Romeo had fed him despite not having enough food for himself. He would be able to afford food soon. They’d register the company, and they’d split all money they earned into three. Draven would get one third, Ciar one third, and Romeo one third. He’d be able to buy food once they got going.

Draven snorted. “He can’t read if we chase him away.”

Thano nodded. “Humbert, if Romeo comes with us
