Cleaning the palette

When painting, it is extremely important to keep a clean space on the palette for mixing new colours. To do this, scrape off the accumulated colour mixtures that you have made so far for the painting. This can be kept in a watertight container and will stay malleable as wet paint if it is topped up with water, as it is the contact with air that dries oil paint. Do not worry that you will not be able to mix these colours again. With a drop of clean solvent and a wipe of kitchen towel, the palette can once again be used to make fresh new colour mixtures that correspond with what you are seeing.

In order to save time when a model is posing, if you tend to have to clean the palette quite regularly, try preparing several palettes in advance. This will stop you from having too large a palette that gets in the way of you and your model. There is a pleasure and clarity in having a palette that is well organized and freshly prepared. As with most things the opposite can also be true; some artists prefer to build up the colours on the palette and take inspiration from the appearance of the dried colours.
