When the three enemy boats drew close to the boat they had been chasing, they found a small number of people with their arms up in the air in surrender. A woman was among them and this pleased them greatly. This much was obvious from the smiles on their faces, which were as mean and menacing as they were wide: predator’s grins, hungry and filled with lust. Of the three men who were with the woman, they could see that none of them would be much cause for trouble, the tiredness in their faces clear for them all to see. All they had to do now was get them back to Command, hand them over, and collect the reward, and they all joked about this being the girl as though it was the funniest thing ever and the easiest win, period.

‘You!’ one of the men in the boats shouted. Like the others he was clean shaven, his uniform neatly pressed. ‘I will throw a rope and you will tie yourselves up. Understand?’

Alex nodded.

‘Do not try anything stupid or I will happily shoot you all from here and let your bleeding carcasses be nothing more than fish food.’

A rope was thrown over and Alex began to tie Helen, Goffey and Jackson. When they were done, Jackson and Goffey worked together with some awkwardness to tie up Alex.

‘Show me!’ the man on the other boat shouted, gesturing into the air with his weapon.

Alex and the others raised their hands to show that they were indeed tied up.

‘Good! This is very good!’ the man called back, his face little more than a massive shit-eating grin. ‘I will throw another rope now and you will tie it to the front of you boat. Understand?’

Alex gave a meek nod and watched a length of rope snake over from the man’s boat. He picked it up and started to shuffle over to the front of the boat.

‘Hurry up!’ the man shouted. ‘Just move it, okay? Come on!’

Alex shuffled some more.

‘What is your problem? Why are you so slow?’

The sound of three dull thuds bumped into the moment as a single grenade landed in the hull of each boat.

‘Now!’ Alex yelled and he, Helen, Goffey and Jackson hit the deck.

A heartbeat later three explosions ripped the other boats to shreds violently cutting off the shocked yells of the occupants. The rubber tubes around the rims of the RIBs were ripped apart and filled the air like confetti. The hulls of each boat came apart, splintering and bouncing off into the air and across the water. One huge piece flew across the water towards Alex’s boat missing it by inches. The engines, too heavy to be that affected by the explosions, clung to the wreckage of the hulls and then sank, smoke and oil spewing out of them as they disappeared below. The men from the boats were thrown like rag dolls into the air, the explosions blasting them apart, taking limbs, bursting torsos, decapitating heads. If any
