Getting Unstuck from The Past

The ghost of the past is tough to go. The harder we try to push it, the more resounding it gets. It comes to haunt at the most inconvenient times. It should come as no surprise that you always remember everything bad that has happened in your life. Your mind is a terrific storage device. It has unlimited storage ability. Scientists believe that you can record more than 2.5 petabytes of data in your brain and still have space left for more. It actually translates to 300 million hours of video recording space. This is huge.

It means that all the things that have happened in your life, positive or negative, are recorded in your mind. However, your mind also has a strong response to negative things as it feels the need to keep playing them, again and again, to keep you safe from falling into the same kind of situation. It is a survival mechanism designed for good.

The problem begins when your mind starts playing the negative things obsessively and makes it impossible for you to start fresh. It makes wiping the slate clean tough. Your mind clutter has an important role to play in this. You let your past remain heavy on you. The solace of victimhood, the desperation to remain safe and vulnerability are some of the strong reasons. These feelings encroach your productive space. They leave no room for positive thinking.

This all happens because you are not being mindful. You have allowed your mind to remain cluttered by negative experiences and want to be in a safe sanctuary.

Let's consider a small story. Once there was a farmer. He had a big farm but he had bad luck in the past harvests. Sometimes the harvests got affected by droughts and sometimes pest attacks killed the harvest. The farmer decided he had had enough of this nonsense. He wouldn't bear this nonsense again as his harvests were getting ruined anyway. So, he decided to play it safe and planted nothing. Was that a solution? It was definitely not a solution. Earlier the farmer had a fear that his harvest would get affected by rain or pests. There was a possibility that he may not get the full harvest. But, his actions made it a certainty that he will not get anything at all. Playing safe is sometimes the worst move. The baggage of the past does this to you.

If you let your mind and thoughts rule your world then you will rot in a corner without ever seeing the light of the day. It will keep telling you that the world is full of dangers and risks.

Learning from the mistakes of the past and letting it go is the only way to excel in this world. If your mind is cluttered with worries it will never be able to learn and succeed. It will lack the required potential. A cluttered mind is never able to make the distinction between a safe decision and a fearful decision.
