Chapter Nine

WHILE HE hadn’t expected anything more than a weak apology, Andy had thought he would receive a reply to the text he’d sent Phil. Somehow being ignored hurt more than the aborted kiss. By Saturday evening, once the hell of buying groceries was over and he’d settled down to watch crap television, the hurt over being ignored had morphed into annoyance at Phil’s childish attitude, because the whole kiss episode had been nothing to get too excited about.

Pretending nothing had happened was all very good for eight-year-olds, but not grown men, and Phil would get a piece of Andy’s mind at their next rehearsal—although he knew his bravado would melt away with his anger by the following morning. Life was too short to worry about the fragile sensibilities of run-by snoggers, even if they did have the kind of biceps Andy would happily lick honey off at the drop of a hat. Still, being an adult was an important quality in prospective boyfriends, even if he was getting a bit ahead of himself thinking of Phil in such a way. Phil had been straight with him—he wasn’t interested in a relationship—but then he’d gone and confused things by kissing Andy, and Andy didn’t like being messed around with.

Well, not in this way.

He picked up a copy of his script and swigged from a bottle of generic supermarket beer as he tried to commit the dialogue to memory. Lines like “Oh, what an impressive set you have there, Mrs. Hurley!” and “Really, Errol, I think trousers are preferable for evensong,” weren’t going to give him trouble remembering them. It’d be wiping them from his mind after the play that would be the issue.

Andy had never read such a collection of innuendos regarding sexual relations with goats, extramarital affairs, and black market deals. The whole play made him question his sanity for getting involved with the Sarky Players. He wondered if he could muster up enough acting ability to convince Derek he had a rare illness that had robbed him of his voice until exactly an hour after the last performance of Whoops, Vicar was over.

Andy’s sour mood didn’t improve even after a decent night’s sleep. He trekked to the little theater. The heavy rain didn’t help matters, and he squelched into the foyer, soaked to the skin thanks to his terrible timing. He wished he had never gotten out of bed.

Derek appeared from the rehearsal room and looked him up and down. “Raining, is it?”

“No, I fell in the Serpentine. Of course it’s bloody raining.”

Derek chuckled. “Come on through, grumpy. I’m sure I can find you a towel, and you can have my coffee.”

The towel came from a stack of limited makeup supplies, and Andy’s mood improved dramatically after finishing Derek’s coffee and drying out somewhat. He’d been the first to get there and was miffed to see his aversion to being late meant he’d borne the worse of the weather. The rest of the cast only looked marginally damp as they arrived.
