The knock on her front door jarred her awake. A glance at the clock made her gasp. She had slept for over two hours. She hurried to the door and found Chet holding a huge burgundy chrysanthemum in a copper planter with Willy at his side, the dog’s tail wagging in quick arcs.

“Norma,” he said, extending the plant. “I’m so sorry for missing our dinner last night. Neva said she saw you this morning and told you about my medical drama. I came to beg your forgiveness and see if I could treat you to dinner tonight.”

She smiled and took the plant from him. “That is gorgeous. Thank you. I think it’s perfect for my porch.” She set it next to a painted bench she often sat on during the evenings. She motioned Chet inside the house, noticing how his crisp blue shirt brought out his eyes. When he passed by her, the scent of sandalwood and lemon tickled her nose. He smelled incredible.

She led him and Willy to the living room. “May I offer you something to drink?”

He held up his hand. “I’m fine for now. I was going to call and thought I’d rather face you in person and ask your forgiveness. My absence was unavoidable, and once at the hospital, it was chaotic.”

“All is forgiven. I trust you’re feeling better?” She moved the blanket she had been using to the arm of her chair and could only hope her hair didn’t look like she’d been sleeping for the last two hours.

He nodded. “I was incredibly dizzy yesterday afternoon, my heart was beating really fast, and I just felt odd. I probably should have just rested, but Henry and Neva thought it best to get checked out. Poor Henry ended up staying there with me all night long.” He sighed. “Anyway, it ended up being related to my blood pressure medication. The doctor recommended a change and also said I was dehydrated, so they hooked me up to a drip, ran all their tests, waited for all the consultations, and finally let me go early this morning.”

“Well, that’s good news, at least.”

“I’ve been sleeping since we got back here and hope poor old Henry recovers. I felt horrible having him drive me, but he insisted.”

“Oh, he’s a very kind person. I’m sure he didn’t mind. It’s what we do around here.”

“I feel awful about last night. I planned to call you and then realized I didn’t have your number. Henry wasn’t in the room with me, so I couldn’t ask him, and then I remembered you hadn’t told anyone here about our past connection and I didn’t want to do anything to upset you. Anyway, it was a mess.”

“Please don’t worry. I’m just glad you’re okay.” Norma rose from her chair and made her way to the kitchen, returning with a fresh cup of tea and a large glass of water for Chet. “Drink up. It sounds like you need to drink more water.”

He smiled. “Yes, ma’am.”

“About dinner,
