The living room was cozy and inviting with a plush couch covered in a soft, cream-colored fabric. It sat in the center of the room, surrounded by two matching armchairs and a plush ottoman. The coffee table in front of the couch was made of dark, knotty wood and was stacked with old, well-worn books.

A stone fireplace took up one wall, with a flickering fire casting warm light onto the room. Above the mantle hung an old, black and white photo my mom had taken of us girls, looking happy and carefree. The walls were painted a soft, moss green, with rustic wooden beams running across the ceiling. The smell of wood smoke mixed with the fresh scent of lavender, creating a comforting and relaxing atmosphere.

I sat down, I looked over at my sister to gauge how the night was going to go. Eleanor used to be a book that I could read easily but now her contents were much more mysterious. “The outside - it looks so good,” I said.

Eleanor put a loving hand on Mateo’s arm. “He spent the whole first week we were here pulling up weeds. Really worked up a sweat. Right, honey?”

Mateo smirked. “Wasn’t too hard. It does look good, no?”

“Yes, it all looks wonderful,” I said.

Mateo sat back in his chair and examined me and Graham, gesturing at the pair of us. “Are you two married?”

Alarm bells went off immediately and we went into damage control. “Oh no, definitely not married. Just friends,” I said.

“Are you seeing anyone, Scarlett?” Eleanor had an indecipherable expression but her withering stare made me feel uneasy.

It was a loaded question with a simple answer. “Right now? No. Taking some time to find myself.”

“What ever happened with that guy from that play you did? Was it Aaron?”

“Adam,” I corrected. “That was a long time ago.”

“Oh that’s too bad. I liked him for you,” Eleanor said. Then she turned to Mateo to continue her thought. “He was in that show you like. Remember we were watching it the other day and I pointed him out to you?”

“Oh yes yes,” Mateo said. “Very handsome.”

I felt myself blush. “Yeah well, other girls thought so too.”

Eleanor's eyes kept darting to Graham, and a mixture of confusion and curiosity was etched on her face. The tension was palpable as she suddenly sat up in her chair and fixed me with a stern gaze. "Can we talk in private?"

The guys continued their conversation, seemingly oblivious to the drama unfolding, chatting about a soccer match they'd watched at the bar a few days prior. Eleanor made her way to the back bedrooms, and I trailed her, my heart pounding with anticipation.

They stepped into the room they used to share as kids. As Eleanor shut the door, she spoke in an angry whisper. “Okay, what is going on? Why the hell are you here?”

“I should say the same thing,” I said. “I thought you were still in Europe. And, I’m sorry, are we not going to talk
