CHAPTER 24

ARRIVAL

Jaxon swept down the master staircase with Crispin at his side, the thud of their boots echoing across the stone corridor. “Did Proctor Burraine give a reason for his visit?”

Crispin shook his head, his wavy black hair shuffling with the movement. “Only that the matter was of some importance.”

“The murders?”

“That would be my guess.”

Rin, that sack of shit. Jaxon would geld the bastard himself. “How did the information get to the Protectorate so soon?”

Crispin shrugged. “Since Trinity is just over a week away, proctors are traveling to the plantations cataloging shifters. Rin probably sent a runner to a nearby estate.”

“Agreed,” Jaxon said on the private path they shared. “Have Kip find out what Rin told the proctor, and make sure one of us is watching Amari at all times, especially if she leaves the nest.”

Crispin nodded, but remained silent.

“Something bothering you?”

“Did she tell you what happened?”

Jaxon shook his head. “She doesn’t remember.”

Crispin sighed and stopped him just outside the receiving room. “Shifters about to turn rogue often experience memory lapses.”

“So do those who have witnessed grisly murders,” Jaxon snapped back, but regretted his outburst at the compassion filling his sentinel’s blue eyes. “Even if she did kill those girls, it wasn’t Amari who ripped them apart, but her beast. We just need to reach her animal and guide them both through transition.”

Crispin’s callused hand squeezed his shoulder. “Your cadre stands beside you, but the Protectorate will want her. We’re running out of time.”

Jaxon grasped Crispin’s forearm, reassured by his sentinel’s conviction. “Until we know more, no one is to discuss her.”

“And if we can’t save her?”

The question Jaxon had avoided tore through his gut. What would he do? His dragon wailed because both knew the answer. A rogue was doomed to a life of pain and madness. If Amari turned, the beautiful girl who had become the heartbeat of his soul would succumb to the insanity of her beast. She’d cease to exist. He steeled his mind before answering. “If it comes to that, I’ll end her misery myself.”

Then, he would follow her. If his cadre deemed him a coward, so be it. At least now he understood why Da chose his mother. He hadn’t even mated Amari, yet she filled a void inside him. She was his missing piece. If she died, darkness would consume him.

Jaxon shook his head to clear his thoughts. With his decision made, his unease settled, knowing he would follow her anywhere, even to the Everlasting. But until then, he would do everything in his power to save them both from such a fate.

He pushed the door open and stepped inside. Although Crispin had warned him about Proctor Burraine, who stood near an archway leading out to the veranda, the person stretched out on a sofa beside the fireplace took him by surprise. She sat with her legs crossed and her hand on the hilt of her sword, her long, chestnut hair sweeping around her shoulders. Lord Wainright’s daughter, Lorelai, had come for her visit.
