Chapter Eight

“Time to call it a night.”

Andy paused the latest DVD playing in his computer and shoved the headphones down to his neck. “What?”

Ryan leaned in and said, “Home,” with exaggerated clarity. “We’ve been running twelve hours straight.”

Andy puffed out a breath that held the remnants of his cheeseburger dinner. They’d both spent the day subsisting on fast food and coffee and had come up with a big goose egg. “I just want to plow through a couple more of these things. So far, I’ve identified six different boys, including Kenny and Reilly.” He shook his head. “Jesus, no wonder Reilly’s so scared. Place was a real sadist with a capital S, for shithead. Other than Kenny, none of the boys looked to be enjoying any part of what Place did to them, and they all looked high or drunk, as well.”

“Yeah, I’m sure that’s how he got them to tolerate it.”

Andy tapped his screen, where the face of a crying boy could be seen lying on a bed. “Look at this kid. He can’t be more than fifteen. Where the hell did Place find them?”

Ryan looked away and jammed his hands in his pocket. “With his money, I bet it was all too easy. Look, if they haven’t cracked his laptop open by morning, we’ll go lean on Johnson some more. If that doesn’t work, we’ll have to go back to Reilly. Now that we know for sure the dead boy spent time with Place, we need the name of the service.”

“Even though we may be chasing the wrong lead. How would this all fit into Place’s murder? Unless it was Reilly or some other kid Place brutalized.”

“That theory is still on the table, even though I hate it. But the missing artwork still seems to be the key. Or somehow the two intersect.” Pinching the bridge of his nose with thumb and forefinger, Ryan swore. “I’m beat. My brain is no longer functioning. Time to sleep on it and get a fresh start early tomorrow.”

Andy held up a finger. “Thirty minutes more, I promise. Then I’ll go home.”

Ryan clapped his partner on his shoulder. “You better. You’re no good to me fried.”

With that, he walked away, desperate now to get to his car and to his home. He didn’t make it past the desk sergeant.

“Hey, Jakie, someone waiting to see you.”

Ryan followed the man’s finger and spotted a figure, two of them, actually, sitting in the waiting area of the station. His stomach did a quick roll, and a spark of interest goosed his groin. Even as he admonished himself to knock it the fuck off, he changed direction and made his way quickly to where Hunter and Pax sat.

The SEAL lifted his head from the wall where it had been resting and looked right at Ryan. The intensity of the gaze caused Ryan’s feet to get clumsy. He skidded to a halt and tried to plaster a look of indifference on his face. His heartbeat, though, picked up speed.
