Back at the motel, I took out my journal and pen. I wrote my fake name—Andrea Hernuss—and the names and phone numbers of a few of my family and friends. If anyone ever found my journal, it would mean something had happened to me, and I hoped that person would have the decency to notify my next of kin. If the police found it, they would know to trace me as Andrea. Then I wrote a note to Elek, in case he ever found my journal—if ever things did get so bad that I had to run away. I wrote something that would throw him off.

Dear Elek, I wrote. I lost it completely. I spoke with my family and I have to go home asap. I am not trying to take off, cut you short or steal from you. I will come back. These were all the terms that he, János and the other drivers used when they accused us of being traitors. They were the worst infractions a girl could make, and they carried the harshest penalties. I needed to protect myself, and start to think ahead, just a little.
