THEY SPENT the entire weekend together, mostly in bed. Steven hadn’t been this happy in a long, long time. Now it was Sunday night and dark, and he was trying to think of an excuse to stay, of a way to convince Andy to take tomorrow off so they could keep playing.

So they could live in their little bubble for a while longer.

They were back in bed, and he had his eyes closed, hoping Andy would think he was asleep and let him stay. He didn’t go as far as to snore, but it was a near thing.

“You never could pretend to sleep, you know.”

Damn. “I remember.”

“What’s on your mind?”

He put his head in his hands and looked over at Andy. “I’m not ready to go, Andy.”

“We can’t hide here forever. I have to work. You have to work.”

“Why not?” he asked, pouting. “I bet you could take the day off. I know I could.”

“I…. And then what about tomorrow? Or the next day? This isn’t going to go away.”

“You’re using logic.” He didn’t want to be logical; he wanted to be with Andy.

“Yeah. I’m good that way.” Andy pulled him close.

Steven snuggled in, burying his face in Andy’s neck, breathing his lover in. “Can we have supper together tomorrow?”

“Yes. What time?” That was easy.

“Five o’clock?” He could drag Andy back to his place afterward and have his wicked way with him.

“Six. I have to meet with new clients at three thirty.”

“Okay. You’ll come to my place?” Forget going out—he could have something catered in.

“If you want me to, yes.”

Of course, he wanted. “I want you to.” He pressed close. “I want.”

“Well, then, I’ll come.” Andy nodded, kissed his forehead. “Do you think you’ll get a lot of shit for it? For me?”

Anger flooded through him. “I think I’m going to give them a whole truckload of shit for you.” He was going to lose it all over his folks.

“I’d like to see that.”

Steven’s eyes flew open and he stared. He’d never heard Andy speak out against Steven’s parents no matter how they’d expressed their feelings. Of course since then they’d both found out just how terrible his parents could be. “Then come with me to that party on Friday. We’ll give it to them.” Steven couldn’t wait to see their faces when he walked in with Andy.

“Me? At a fancy-assed party? I’d embarrass you.”

Steven shook his head. “No. No, I’d be proud to have you on my arm, Andy. I always was.”

Andy looked at him, eyes warm, shining with tears. “Yeah? For real?”

“God, yes. Yes. Always.” He slid his hand along Andy’s cheek, the beard tickling his thumb.

“Okay. But I don’t have a suit.”

Steven could feel the scars, thick and rough, under his fingers.

“I’d be happy to buy you a suit, but if you want, you can wear your good jeans and shirt. That’d be fine.” He was never going to ask Andy to be something he wasn’t. Never again.

“I’d be happy to wear my jeans.”

“That’s cool. I seem to remember you look pretty good in those jeans.
