Chapter Twenty-Two
Nathalie
Nathalie woke slowly, stretching and yawning until she kicked Kesin’s leg. She refused to open her eyes. If she didn’t, the day wouldn’t start, and she could lay in bed all day. An alarm nearby chose that moment to ring. Nathalie sighed, opening her eyes to darkness. The orbs that Ryan had thrown around the room had all vanished, meaning he’d left a while ago. They stayed only briefly once their caster left. She groaned and twisted, knocking the small alarm off the bedside table. It crashed to the floor with a metallic crunch and one last mangled chime. Kesin grumbled and turned over. A soft click and a tall lamp beside the bed bathed the room in light. A threadbare curtain surrounded the bed, the closest Kesin’s hideaway had to a wall.
Kesin turned back toward her, his hands grasping her hips, pulling her close. “Don’t get up,” he mumbled, eyes closed.
“We’ll see.”
Kesin nodded and mumbled something unintelligible, already asleep. She absently traced his jawline with her finger. They’d only been bonded two weeks and already he was calming her, she could feel it. Despite her overreaction the night before. She wanted to think she was calming him too, bringing him back to Earth, away from his silly dreams. She ran her fingers over his scar, and he grimaced, his eyes opening slowly. “I do love you,” he murmured.
He pushed a tangled bit of hair from her face, and she smiled. Yes, he had changed, and she had too. For the first time, since that first kill, she could see a future that didn’t involve feeding the imaginary monster inside her. She could see herself being something other than a Beaconer. “I love you too,” Nathalie said.
Pulling her forward, Kesin kissed her, and she lost track of everything but the feel of his lips on hers.
“We can’t stay in bed,” she said breathlessly.
“I beg to differ.” He ran his hand down her back.
“That’s nice, keep doing that.”
“Just call off for whatever you’re supposed to do today. We could spend all day here, underground and away from everyone.” Nathalie lay quietly against Kesin’s chest, letting him ramble. Enjoying the feeling of him beneath her. His breathing, slow and steady, lulled her almost to sleep. Finally, he broke the silence. “Ryan paced most of the night. He’ll spiral out of control if…” He tugged her hair gently until she looked up at him. “I know it’s not the best date, but maybe we could go check out where Joren disappeared? Maybe we’ll find proof for Ryan. I don’t think he’ll go back. He’s terrified. But maybe we can go for him? Keep him from having to…” Kesin’s rambling trailed off as he studied her face.
Nathalie regarded him quietly, biting her lip. His worry was clear on his face and the flush creeping up his cheeks betrayed his discomfort. “I promised Yseron I’d check it out next time I went beaconing, but maybe it’ll be easier off-duty. And with company.”
The worry melted away and was replaced with a relieved grin.
