I wouldn’t say that Leslie and I spent the next couple weeks in the ‘throes of passion’ but...then again, I can’t say that we’ve really been talking much since the first night we spent together. Don’t get me wrong, we see each other almost every day, but there definitely isn’t a lot of talking.

At least, until the first official practice of the season looms closer and I’m torn between spending time staying faithful to Captain’s workouts or spending all my spare time at Leslie apartment. I tell myself that mornings are for Captain and nighttime is for Leslie, but it means that my sleep schedule takes the brunt of it.

When I decide to cancel a dinner date to make up yet another morning run I missed because I woke up at Leslie’s apartment, my girlfriend isn’t too pleased that I’m sacrificing date night for an evening to train.

I thought you already worked out today.

I can’t help but sigh at my screen. Yes, I did work out today, but that was supposed to be my second workout of the day. I missed the first one when she wouldn’t let me leave the bed this morning to go run.

Instead, I bite my tongue and send her an apologetic response back, promising her that I’ll make up for it. At least Captain is a little more forgiving.

Another evening run? Did Leslie get a hold of you again last night?

I scoff but I’m glad we can joke about all of this. Her texts have gotten more regular since she got back from LA. We’re actually back to texting every day.

Leslie’s demand for my time gets more and more pronounced until the dam cracks the day I leave for my first official practice of the season. I’m excited to head back and move into my dorm, excited to see my team, and excited to get back on the field. Sure, maybe I don’t feel as in shape as I could be with the distractions here, but going back to Fresno will give me the time and space to play a little catch up. The sooner I can get back, the sooner I can get a starting position.

I’m almost packed up in my car and ready to go when Leslie pulls up in my drive. Good timing. It’ll give us a solid ten minutes and then I can head out on the hour-long drive to the college. Leslie doesn’t look at all happy to see me though.

I give her a hug and a kiss anyway and my family heads inside to give us a couple minutes alone.

“I’ll be back before you know it,” I assure her and I have to admit it kind of sucks that the last words I’ll say to her before I leave are trying to calm down a fight that hasn’t even started yet. Leslie doesn’t seem so convinced when I start hauling my stuff in the back of my truck.

“You can’t stay even a little longer? I’ve barely been able to see you at all in the past couple days.
