Irish in Belfast

1892–1960

This essay focuses on Belfast ‘as the crucible of the Irish language revival movement in Ulster’. It examines the battle for the survival of the language in the 1920s and 1930s, looking in particular at the key role played by Comhaltas Uladh (the Gaelic League) and, in the early years, the Catholic Church. The work of some of the major Irish language figures of the era such as P.T. McGinley, Seán Mac Maoláin and Tarlach Ó hUid is also examined, as is the fierce opposition of the new unionist state to the language. The essay concludes with an account of the Irish classes held at the YMCA, Belfast and the development of the innovative Irish language club, Cumann Chluain Ard.
