A Failed Plan

The next day Vi sat down at her usual table for breakfast, being cautious as to avoid Miss Lane, Carla, Audrie, Hannah, and Stephanie.

I’ve made a whole lot of enemies, she thought to herself. I hope I don’t make any more. I’ve already got my work cut out for me, keeping away from five different people all at once.

At least she had new friends, she reassured herself. And they weren’t traitors. At least, not in any way that she knew of, which was good enough for her in that case.

Soon Maddie and Sophie joined her. That day they were acting odd. Sophie kept shooting looks at Maddie, and Maddie returned them. Every time Vi tried to strike up a conversation, they either gave a very simple reply or didn’t even say anything at all.

Finally, Vi had had enough of the strange behavior and confronted the two girls.

“What’s going on, guys? You’re acting weird.”

When Maddie glared at her, Vi tried again.

“Come on, tell me,” pressed Vi.

Sophie sighed and glanced at Maddie one last time before leaning over to Vi and whispering in her ear.

“There are too many people around,” she said slowly. “Maddie will tell you later. Meet her outside of the second-floor bathroom as soon as school ends today. Okay?”

“Er, okay?” Vi became even more confused when Sophie whispered in Maddie’s ear and then peeked around the cafeteria, as if making sure that no one had heard what she had said.

What is it they want to tell me?

Her heart sank when she thought, Maybe they decided that they don't like me after all.

Sophie must have read her mind, because as soon as she saw Vi’s dismayed expression, she quickly said, “No, don’t worry, it’s not anything bad.” She gave a sly grin. “In fact, it’s some pretty good news. For all three of us.”

Vi raised her eyebrows at this. “Uh, okay?” She gave a weak smile.

I have no idea what to expect out of this.

After school that day, Vi speed-walked up the stairs, often glancing around to make sure that nobody saw her. Thinking back to that morning, she understood that Sophie and Maddie definitely did not want anybody else to know what they were about to tell her.

Vi arrived on the second floor and walked over to the bathroom door. Sure enough, Maddie was impatiently standing outside of the door, holding something silver and shiny in her hand.

Vi’s heart began to beat faster when Maddie glared at her.

“You’re late. I said as soon as school ended.”

Vi glanced over at the clock on the wall. “I’m not late.”

“You were supposed to be here five minutes ago.”

“I couldn’t get over here that fast! I had to be careful!” Vi shot back.

Maddie’s eyes widened. “Lower your voice!” she hissed. “I don’t want anyone to hear us!”

Vi crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. “Why? Are you planning to murder someone and you want to blame it on me? Or am I the person you want to murder?”

“Uh, no.” Maddie gave her a strange look.
