Chapter 24

SOPHIE FOUND IT DIFFICULT to get up on the last day of the school games. Competing against people a hundred times stronger and faster was not easy.

“I should have settled for cheerleading like you two,” she grumbled as she dragged herself into the bathroom.

Aimi and Cera were having fun. Every night they spent hours rehashing the happenings of the day, while Sophie couldn’t get to bed soon enough.

The last race before lunch found Sophie waiting beside the tracks. The gun sounded, and the runners in position set off. When all in the line-up had taken off, Sophie stepped in with the rest of the second lappers, half jogging in place as she waited to receive her baton. All aligned with her from the other three colour teams were faeries.

When the yellow team werecat crossed the three hundred metre mark, Sophie’s heart picked up pace. She came closer, and Sophie started running along the track as practised, her hand stretched back to receive the baton.

Just as the faerie in red broke into a run with her baton in hand, the yellow baton hit her hand painfully. Lacking the luxury to mull over it, Sophie broke into a sprint in the opposite direction, but not fast enough as the two remaining faeries sped past her, using their wings to propel them forward with each step they took so that they were half-flying, half-running.

The rules of Drachenburg games allow for the use of otherworld advantages as long as the basic rules of the sport were followed. Sophie had no wings, and so before she knew it, she was behind the third faerie by what could be a hundred metres. It was embarrassing, but she pushed on.

Then something odd happened. The next stride she took was wider than naturally possible. It kept happening, and she felt an unnatural wind propel her forward, thrusting her high with each step, so that her strides were more than five metres long, and she was half flying too.

It was an odd sensation, and she was scared at first, then she assumed that a yellow team witch was helping her.

Thank you! Sophie whispered to the wind as she flew past two perplexed faeries, and managed to hand her baton to the next witch in her team as the fastest faerie handed hers.

“Did you see that?” she asked elated, running to Klaus. “We have powerful witches in our team.”

Klaus didn’t smile back though.

“What’s wrong?”

“It wasn’t anyone on our team.”

“What do you mean?” Sophie asked, her excitement waning.

“In fact, the whole time you were running no one could do magic. At least, no one in the student body.”

Only one person was capable of such power.

“Boke?” she whispered.

Klaus nodded. “Witches in the other teams are angry. They also tried to help their teammates but Boke somehow blocked their magic and helped you.”

“Her teammates won’t be happy,” Markus said, approaching them.

“I didn’t realise how strong she was,” Klaus muttered. “She can block other witches’ magic? Witches take such slights very personally.”

“No one likes to feel powerless,” Markus agreed.
