Ned Rorem currently teaches at the Curtis Institute, and divides his time between his house in Nantucket and a New York City apartment. I spoke with him at his Manhattan home on December 8, 1990, and again on February 24, 1991. Although he has published several volumes of diaries and had at that time just begun writing his autobiography, he has intentionally written very little about his own music. In speaking with him, I sought to learn more about his earlier, less well known compositions, as well as his more celebrated scores, vocal and instrumental.
