âWow, youâre taking me to the space museum?â
Callum bounced in his seat as Ian parked the pickup. He was freaking adorable as usual, but his excitement took it to another level. âHow did you know I loved that stuff?â
âYou mean, besides the Star Wars ringtone on your phone, your underwear with the Doctor Who telephone booth, and the bookcase full of Star Trek books I saw in your bedroom?â
Callum laughed. âMy geeky secretâs out, huh?â
âOh, yeah. Plus, you work in a lab, and you make chemistry jokes. I figured anything science and technology would be in your wheelhouse.â
âYouâre not wrong,â Callum said. He continued to grin as they got out of the car and approached the entrance to the space museum. âThis dating thing is off to a good start.â
Callum was like a kid in a candy store, and the funny thing was, he already knew most of the information the museum had on display. From the authentic SR-71A Blackbird supported by large columns to hover over their heads in the lobby to the extensive exhibits about the space race between the US and Russia, Callum had some small remark to add.
âCrazy to think that Germany with all its atrocities put us on the path to space, isnât it?â He shook his head as they looked at the exhibit about people who lived, suffered and died in labor camps to create missiles that were later used as the basis for the first rockets launched by the US and Russia.
âWeâd have gotten there eventually either way, donât you think?â
âMaybe, but the US snagged most of Germanyâs rocket scientists at the end of World War II. Stalin was pissed. He planned to do the same, but we got there first. Thereâs an exhibit up ahead about it. He got hold of some research and lower-level scientists, if I remember right, and then we both set out to best one another during the Space Race.â
âHuh. I never knew that.â
The museum was an amazing collection of space artifacts used by astronauts through the ages and history lessons of how the space program developed. But Ian couldnât help being more fascinated by Callumâs enthusiasm than the exhibits before them.
âLetâs go look at the astronaut paraphernalia,â Callum suggested. âI used to always dream of being an astronaut when I was a kid, and itâs more uplifting than reading about Nazi missiles.â
âSo, why didnât you become an astronaut?â
âEh, life happened. What little boy doesnât want to be a cowboy or an astronaut or a firefighter, right?â
Ian snorted. âMy brotherâs a firefighter.â
âOh yeah? You didnât mention that. Daniel or Sean?â
âSean.â Ian rolled his eyes. âHe tends to run headlong into things. Ma was pissed for a long time, Iâll tell you that. She didnât want her boys risking their lives like their father did.â
âUnderstandable.â
âSean is impulsive, though. He met someone who was like, âYouâre fit, you should go into firefighting,â and he enrolled in a program the next day.â
âMaybe heâs just decisive.â
Ian snorted. âHe probably thought it would get him laid.
