Chapter Sixteen

Somewhere in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Nighttime

T minus 9 days ’til Christmas

Of all the regrets he could possibly have in that moment, Nick struggled with several, none of which had anything to do with his current predicament. He should have told Ashley how much he loved her and that he wished he could have stayed with her forever. What had started out as a fun challenge—getting the beautiful resistant girl to date him for the summer—had turned into a deep emotional attachment on both their parts. And they hadn’t even had their fourth date.

A shiver ripped through Nick and the dog next to him stirred, moving closer. It was still so dark he swore he could only see his hand in front of his face because he knew it was there. The dog hadn’t left him but the bite of a cold winter’s night in the desert reached out to torment him, even through all his gear.

His men…were they captured? Dead? They wouldn’t have left him behind if it could be avoided. If they even suspected he was alive. Since he was definitely on his own, he had to assume the worst. Either the ringing in his ears was getting better or he was adjusting to it. He still couldn’t hear anything but that unsettling whine but it was no longer so piercing.

He’d give anything to be back in the states with Ashley…or even back on base with her on the other end of the phone. If he only heard one more thing in the world, he wanted it to be Ashley’s voice. Her soft laughter when they joked around, her low moans when they made out. He wished he’d just gone ahead and told her how he felt. He was pretty sure she knew, but he should have said the words even though she’d made it clear she didn’t want to hear them.

He’d had the perfect opportunity on the third, and last, official date. They’d never made it to date number four. Fate hadn’t let them get that far. But he’d known by that third date exactly how he felt…
