Chapter 27

Claire watched the sunlight make the top of the curtains glow. Her alarm wouldn’t go off for another ten minutes and she was content to lie quietly.

Memories of last night came to her as shivers of pleasure. Human contact on that intimate and physical level pleased her. She liked caresses and kissing, enjoyed making love and had desperately missed all of that since Greg went. She’s missed them before, if she thought back on it, and it wasn’t until the split she realised he’d withdrawn from her as he grew closer to Matilda.

Friends told her it should be an exciting time and she should spread her wings but her adventures on Tinder and a couple of dating agencies hadn’t exactly been successful.

Holding and touching and making Mike breathe faster was wonderful though. Even better, the way her body had responded to his touch had been just what she’d needed.

She rolled onto her back and ran her hands over her stomach. She would pick some condoms up today even though he’d said he would – better to be safe than sorry.

* * *

Claire put Eric Gnome back in his rightful place on the tree stump. She stuck her thumb up at the patio doors and held the pose long enough for Scott’s camera to catch her. Then she did her stretches before walking out to the street.

Claire walked towards the front of her car. There were no flowers but another sheet of A5 paper had been pinned under the wiper blade. A pain throbbed briefly at the base of her skull and flared behind her eyes, making her squint as she pulled the paper free. The hangman image on the back looked like the one on the last note – it looked, she realised as she turned to check it was still there, just like the one chalked onto her house – but the face had been smudged and the two Xs for eyes dragged towards the chin area.

Breathing deeply, she turned the paper over in her hands. The message had been printed in the same cursive, large point font.

HE’S MARRIED

She read it twice and the words began to swim until anger pushed back at the fear. This had to be a case of mistaken identity. She looked at the other cars in the street, trying to guess which owner the note could have been meant for. She knew from bitter experience it was impossible to tell who was having an affair, but she absolutely knew it wasn’t her.

Unless Mike wasn’t telling her something.

A shiver trailed down her spine. Could he have lied to her? Was he using the group as a pick-up place and his wife had found out and this was her way of warning Claire off?

Except, except… This had to be her paranoia talking. For his wife to have known she must have been at the bowling alley to see Claire and Mike flirting to get angry enough to put the first flowers on the car on Monday.
