Back at the house, we’re alone again. Kennedy’s parents are out to dinner and won’t be back for a while. I’m considering taking a nap after that adventurous hike, but Kennedy asks me to join her outside on the porch swing. I don’t know what I’m expecting, but it’s beautiful. The swing is big enough for two as it overlooks the water, and it’s secluded enough on the side of the house where no one will bother us. It’s sort of romantic.

“I thought you might like reading here,” she says nervously.

“I’d love that.” I smile, sitting next to her.

“I brewed you that tea you like too.” She points to one of the mugs in front of her. The other is much darker, so I assume it’s her coffee.

“Thank you.” I take a sip, and it’s a bit sweeter than I like, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Kennedy surprises me by patting her thighs as if to tell me to put my legs up. I twist a bit and let both legs fall over hers. She puts one arm across them like a seatbelt. This feels more intimate than I’m used to with her. But I’m not about to say anything, especially after the kiss we shared today. So, I pull out my Kindle and read about some couple falling in love. Kennedy scrolls through her phone for a bit and then looks out at the water. When I feel her eyes on me, I stop reading.

“Can I help you?” I chuckle. What was up with her?

She leans toward me as if she’s about to kiss me but pushes back a single strand of my hair behind my ear. Then she looks at me, and in one motion, her lips are on mine. It’s longer than before and so much better. We’re alone, letting her relax and ease into this. I can’t form words or thoughts as she kisses me unlike any other has. I wonder again if she feels this too.
