CHAPTER SEVEN
âYOU HAVE TO see this.â
Alice looked up from her desk. âSee what? Iâm writing a discharge letter.â
âDaisy and Doodle. And Wuzzle.â
Wuzzle? She got up, trying to stifle her smile. âI meant to askâhow is Wuzzle?â
His mouth softened into a grin. âHeâs much better, thank you. He had his stitches out this morning.â
She felt her mouth twitch. âDid he?â
âYes, he did. And heâs telling Doodle all about it.â
He was. Daisy was sitting propped up in bed, Alana in a chair on one side of her, and Doodle, the soppy great thing, was lying on Daisyâs bed staring attentively up at her and Wuzzle as she talked, his tail waving softly.
âAnd now Iâm all better,â Daisy said in a high, squeaky voice, and then giggled.
Doodleâs plume of a tail waved a bit harder, and he rested his head on Daisyâs thigh and sighed, his eyes still fixed on her face.
âOh, Wuzzle. I think Doodleâs tired, donât you?â she said, and the tail waved again. She tucked Wuzzle in between Doodleâs paws, and Doodle looked down at him, rested his head beside Wuzzle and sighed again.
Alice heard a soft click, and realised Marco had taken a photo. âFor Olive,â he said softly, and she nodded.
âSheâll like that.â
Daisy heard their voices and looked up. âWuzzle and Doodle have made friends,â she said, her face brighter than Alice had ever seen it.
âThatâs lovely. Doodleâs very nice, isnât he? And I hear Wuzzleâs all better now.â
âHe isâand Iâm nearly all better. I had toast this morning.â
âDid you? And were you all right?â
She nodded. âYes. It was very nice. It had chocolate spread on it, but not much. Jenny said I could only have a little bit. And then I had some chicken and rice for lunch, and ice cream. It was yummy.â
âThatâs great news, Daisy,â Alice said, glad that Jenny, the nurse assigned to Daisy, had managed to find something that the little girl dared to eat. Sheâd become afraid of food because it had caused her pain in the past, and it was a relief to know that she was starting to enjoy it again.
Alana looked at her watch and got to her feet. âRight, Daisy, I think Doodle and I have to go and see another little girl somewhere else, but Iâll come again tomorrow, if you like?â
Daisy nodded enthusiastically, and gave Doodle a lovely gentle cuddle before he hopped off the bed, had a little shake and trotted off by Alanaâs side.
âDo you know where Mummy is?â Daisy asked, but Alice shook her head.
âNo, I donât. Marco?â
He shook his head. âNo, but Iâll call her, bellissima. Donât worry, sheâll be here soon.â
âWhereâs Amil?â
âHeâs gone to have some pictures taken of his insides. He shouldnât be long. And Iâll come back soon, I promise.â
They walked away together, and Alice gave him a searching look. âPictures?â she said, and he nodded.
âYes, a follow-through contrast scan, and also a lactose intolerance test. But now I need to send this picture to Olive and find out where the hell they are.
