CHAPTER SIX

‘OH, please,’ Maddie sneered. ‘You just can’t bear the thought that someone else might see the potential in my estate and want to invest in me.’

Nic’s eyes flashed. ‘I think he wants to invest, all right, but it’s not necessarily in your estate. Where are you meeting him?’

Maddie went puce. She refused to answer and went to walk around Nic again, but he caught her arm in a big hand. Maddie gritted her teeth against the instant chemical reaction in her body.

He was incredulous. ‘Don’t tell me you’re going to meet him in his room? Is that what that little conference was about?’ Maddie went even more red and Nic exploded, ‘For crying out loud, Maddie, you’re too inexperienced to deal with someone like Morales. He’ll chew you up and spit you out!’

Maddie reacted viscerally. Little did Nic know how inexperienced she really was—physically and in situations like these. But every ounce of pride demanded that she project an image of confidence. She looked up at Nic and tossed her hair back. She smiled up at him and hoped it had the same slightly patronising edge that Morales had just used on her.

‘Do you really think I haven’t met men like Morales before now? I know his type, Nic. He just needs to be played a certain way.’

Nic’s face flushed and he dropped her arm suddenly, as if it was poisonous. Immediately Maddie felt bereft.

He sounded utterly disgusted. ‘Forgive me for thinking for a second that you might be going into a situation you’re not equipped to handle. If he’s the kind of investor you want, and you’re willing to do what it takes, then clearly I’ve underestimated you and your ambition.’

Nic took a step back from her and walked away, leaving Maddie feeling vulnerable and insecure. What exactly had Nic meant by not trusting Morales? She recalled his smooth smile and shuddered a little. Surely even if he came on to her she could just walk away?

Maddie didn’t like the way Nic had made her feel slightly ashamed just now, or the feeling, for a brief moment, that he might be concerned for her safety. Maddie wasn’t used to anyone else stepping in to fight her battles for her. Her brother had been the only one who’d ever stood up for her, and he’d died a long time ago.

Realising that she was standing and brooding in an empty dining room, Maddie knew she had to move. She glanced at her watch and cursed silently. It was already nearly time to meet Morales. Pushing down the sudden trepidation she felt, Maddie hurried to the lifts.

Nic was standing in one of the hotel bars with some acquaintances when he saw a flash of green out of the corner of his eye and looked to see Maddie disappear into a lift. His stomach clenched so hard for a second that his vision blurred slightly. He couldn’t believe that she was actually going through with it. He’d underestimated her, all right. Underestimated her greed and her ambition to succeed no matter what it took.
