CHAPTER TWELVE

Kieran watched the hilly green fields pass his passenger window as Catriona had insisted on picking him up from the station. They would meet their sister Nora and brothers Devlin and Finn at the Moore farm before their infamous half sisters would join them.

One of his half sisters had arranged this family reunion on Emmy’s family farm, of all places. Kieran knew not everyone of his siblings was down with meeting their half sisters after awkwardly ignoring each other at their cousin Ryleigh’s wedding.

But Kieran looked forward to meet his half sisters today. Especially since it was the perfect occasion to finally see the farm where his Emmy had grown up and still lived.

Yeah, she was now his Emmy in his mind.

Emmy’s reaction at seeing him at the pub had said it all. If he’d meant nothing to her, she wouldn’t run away from him every chance she got. If he was just a nobody to her, she would ignore him or even said ‘Hi’ before being on her way again.

The warm Texas air hit him straight in the face when he got out of Catriona’s truck. He glanced around, noticing the few pigs rooting the ground with their snouts in their pens, as he heard the unmistakably neighing and whinny of several horses.

“Welcome to the Moore farm,” some big dude said as he walked up to them.

“Thanks,” Catriona said.

“I’m Ryan Moore and I’ll bring you to the setup my sister arranged for this reunion.”

Kieran wondered if Emmy had taken it upon herself to organize this awkward ‘meet-my-father’s-secret-family-party’.

“Hi, I’m Catriona, and this is my brother, Kieran,” Catriona said as they followed the almost seven-foot guy over the farm as he led them past a vegetable garden.

“Nice to meet you,” Ryan said.

He held still for a moment and said, “This is my sister’s vegetable garden. She’ll use our homegrown ingredients for today’s menu.”

Catriona grinned as they continued walking behind Ryan. “Awesome! That’s like having a fridge that never gets empty.”

Ryan chuckled. “If you’d like the same vegetables over and over again, then yeah. I personally can’t stand the sight of beets anymore. Emmy is the best cook out there, but pickled beets, beet salad, beet soup—ugh. I can’t stand the smell of them nowadays.”

“I hear you. I hate beets, too,” Catriona said.

They arrived at three picnic tables and joined the rest of their siblings. “Maybe we should pair off and sit down at separate tables? I think we should mingle from the start,” Nora said.

“Great idea, sis,” Kieran said and sat down at the furthest table. Nora and Finn stuck together, and Catriona and Devlin sat down at the third table.

“I wonder if they will talk to us today,” Catriona said, scrunching her nose.

Meeting each other for the first time at their cousin Ryleigh’s wedding hadn’t been a great success. He was glad they got to have a do-over. As Finn and Nora and Devlin and Catriona started talking amongst themselves, Kieran was more interested in the farm and ranch house in front of him.
