Chapter Fourteen

Cade saddled Scamp as soon as he got back home. He was too keyed up to do anything but ride. That damn kiss was more than he’d bargained for.

He didn’t know what compelled him to approach her. What made him slide in close and cover her mouth with his? Was it some internal need to prove that a kiss was all he wanted? Did he think by kissing her he would erase her from his brain?

Now he was screwed because that moment was imprinted into his memory forever, and a replay in his mind would never do. He wanted more. Needed more.

He rode the fence line trying to get Abby out of his head. The feel of her off his lips.

Seeing what he’d done since he’d arrived filled him with pride for what he’d accomplished. The fence would last for years to come. Though it cost a pretty penny, the quality was important.

He came across several of his cattle. That filled him with a sense of pride. He’d earned every penny it took to put those cows on his land. Another delivery was coming from Lloyd tomorrow. Soon, he wouldn’t have to search to find them meandering across the acreage. There would be too many to count with a single glance.

As he trotted along the fence that ran parallel to the tree line, he noticed several of Abby’s hives. There was a low hum that filled the air. At one time in his life, he would have feared that sound. It still made his heart pick up the pace, but now that bees had stung him, he was beyond fear of the unknown.

There was no desire to experience it again. That was unless Abby would care for his wounds. He’d take a sting for her. He had to admit he was skeptical of her medicinal use of honey as a fix for everything, but it seemed to work. His burns were almost healed, and there was no scarring. The stings had been fine that night.

Too bad her honey couldn’t solve the ache between his legs. Maybe it could, but he wasn’t slathering his junk with the sweet stuff to find out. With his luck, he’d attract a bear that would be happy to castrate him. Hell, he wasn’t sure Abby was far from that notion.

He led Scamp around the acreage and when he got to the side that separated his land from hers, it tempted him to cross over just to get a reaction. Would she really take aim and pull the trigger?

He wanted to see her again, but it seemed the only time she responded to him was when he annoyed her or when he kissed her.

He’d never get another chance to lock lips if a fence constantly separated them. He was almost tempted to shove one of his cattle through the small gate just so she’d have something to complain about.

He had to come up with a plan to get her to come to him this time. He’d taken that first step.
