Must we repeat history, or can we as American citizens agree that the past is gone, and that we will learn from it and move on? If not, the result may be similar to that occurring elsewhere around the world. Arabs and Jews call the same patriarch “Father” because Abraham sired both Ishmael and Isaac. His descendants are now warring with each other, causing death and destruction in the Middle East. In Northern Ireland, Catholics and Protestants have a long history of religious bigotry and bloodshed. In Africa, tribal warfare has caused massacres of hundreds of thousands of people. Let us learn that this type of behavior is the bitter fruit of hatred and discrimination. America should be better than that because it was founded on Judeo/Christian principles. We could become the country that is described on the base of the Statue of Liberty* if only we decide to look Above for the answer. Every generation has its defining moment. I hope this is ours—that we look to the One who created us all and realize that we are all children of the same Heavenly Father. One of His greatest commandments asks us to love others as we love ourselves. Will we finally get it right? I hope so.
