CHAPTER TWENTY

Avery’s heart skipped a beat when she saw Ethan’s car parked in the driveway. What’s he doing at home? Before she reached the front door, a lone magpie caught her eye. It was perched on the cypress tree outside the porch, staring at her. She paused and stared back. The magpie held her gaze for a moment before flying off.

Ethan flung open the front door and stood glaring at her. Intimidated, she lowered her eyes as she approached him.

“Where have you been?” he demanded.

Avery averted his haughty stare and attempted to walk past him into the house. He gripped her arm and halted her. “Not so fast. I asked you a question. Now, where the fuck have you been sneaking off to?”

Avery searched his face and saw nothing but anger etched into it. She knew she needed to handle him delicately when he was like this. She forced a smile.

“I went to the post office,” she lied.

Ethan’s grip tightened. He pulled her into the hallway and slammed the door shut.

“You’re lying. I can always tell when you’re lying to me. Now, I will ask you one more time, where have you been?”

Avery shuddered beneath Ethan’s towering figure. Her eyes shimmered with tears, and she whispered, “I went to see Willow.”

Ethan expelled a harsh breath. He released his grip on her arm and began pacing the wooden floor angrily. Avery shrank into the wall, rubbing her arm. Fear enshrouded her. Avery tried to anticipate his next move, but nothing could have prepared her for what came next. Ethan spun around, raised his fist, and punched her cheek. She toppled, hitting the floor full force, and clipping the back of her head on the marble console table. She yelped in pain and writhed on the floor, caressing her cheek. Her phone slipped from her hand and slid across the floor. Ethan grabbed it as Avery scurried into a corner and cradled her arms around her legs, pulling them in close to her chest.

Ethan scrolled through her phone and then threw it at her. “Why did you make me do this? This is all your doing. You know that, right?”

Avery did not look up. Her head rested on her knees as she whimpered from the pain.

“Don’t ignore me. You made me do this. All because you lied. Now what I want to know is why the fuck you felt the need to lie to me, and don’t make me ask you twice.”

Avery knew she could not win either way. It was only a matter of moments before he hit her again. Her eyes flooded with tears, and she could already feel her cheek swelling.

She glanced up at him. “I needed to confront Willow.”

Ethan raged. “So let me get this straight. You needed to confront Willow about what I revealed to you?”

Avery nodded nervously.

“And I am guessing she denied it?”

“Yes,” she said, shifting her gaze from him.

“Of course, she did. What did you expect, a full confession? Are you wilfully stupid? You went behind my back, Avery, because you clearly doubted me.
